I recently visited Shoryu. I went for a dinner with my boyfriend. We were greeted quickly and sat down quickly. We ordered our drinks, (ramune soda’s) which took over 20 minutes to arrive.
The waiter just placed them down and didn’t ask if we wanted to order.
So i had to get someone’s attention to actually order any food. Which, is a lot harder when they all just huddled around the till system and have their back to the customers.
Once we i ordered (2x halloumi buns, vegetable tempura & 2 chicken katsu currys) which all arrived at the same time, which was nice but, after waiting 25 minutes for it all. It wasn’t that hot. It was barely warm. The food was nice but wasn’t worth the price.
We ate our food and ordered desert, which again, we had to get someone’s attention, which again, wasn’t easy.
We ordered desert and 15 minutes after ordering, we were told they were out of the desert we ordered. I understand you can sell out of items but, 15 minutes? Surely we should of known straight away after ordering.
Anyway, after ordering 2 new deserts, (matcha cheesecake & ice cream, yuzu & chocolate), which only one arrived and i had to re-order the ice cream. Their was no apologies for the wait or the miss order.
We finished deserts and wanted the bill, again, i had to get someone’s attention. With all the staff’s back to you, it’s hard for them to see you need attention
I work out the bill to be £55 yet when it arrives. We were hit was a service charge of 12.5% which i think is ridiculous. We had no service, no one checked up on us and made sure we were okay. The food was okay, i mainly ate it due to waiting so long.
The prices didn’t go with the meal size, the service charge was not worth it and i think they should state they charge for service. As it is high for the lack of service you actually get.
I won’t be returning unless the staff focus more on customers and the wait...
Read morein Oxford’s bustling Westgate centre, Shoryu Ramen is a welcome retreat from the high street frenzy — a place where steamy bowls of ramen offer rich comfort, and the buzz of casual dining meets quality Japanese cuisine. Atmosphere
With its sleek interiors, soft lighting, and subtle Japanese accents, the setting is modern and relaxed. The ambience is lively but not overwhelming, making it a great spot for solo diners, couples, or groups looking for a satisfying, informal meal. Staff are friendly, well-informed, and quick to recommend their favourites from the menu. The Ramen
The highlight here is the Ganso Tonkotsu Ramen — Shoryu’s signature dish. The broth, slow-cooked for over 12 hours, is creamy, rich, and umami-packed. Thin, bouncy noodles carry the flavour perfectly, while slices of tender chashu pork and a soft-boiled, soy-marinated egg elevate the bowl to something special.
Those seeking heat will appreciate the Karaka Tan Tan Tonkotsu, with its spicy miso paste and garlic oil — full-bodied and bold without being overwhelming.
Vegetarian options are strong too. The White Natural Ramen, made with a delicate soy milk broth, is impressively creamy and flavourful, with all the satisfaction of a traditional bowl. Sides & Drinks
Don’t skip the Shoryu buns — fluffy, steamed delights filled with succulent pork or chicken. The Takoyaki are crispy and soft, topped with bonito flakes for a classic finish. There’s a good range of drinks too, including Japanese beers, sake, and matcha-infused cocktails, plus light desserts like mochi or matcha cheesecake. Verdict
Shoryu Ramen Oxford delivers on all fronts: flavour, atmosphere, and authenticity. Whether you're a ramen aficionado or simply after a warming, no-fuss meal, this is a place that knows what it's doing and does it very well. In a city packed with dining options, Shoryu earns its place as a go-to for comfort food...
Read moreI recently visited Shoryu Ramen with my wife, and our dining experience there is worthy of a Google Maps review - like a well-made Hollywood blockbuster, just short of an Oscar-winning epic.
Our tale begins on a busy night when the restaurant was buzzing with life. Despite the full house, we managed to find seats at the bar in a matter of minutes. Our server, Hari, welcomed us with politeness, friendliness, and accommodation, setting the tone for our food adventure.
Sharing dishes like seasoned travelers, we embarked on a journey of flavors. The spicy fried chicken bun, part of their Monday Bun deal, offered a kick of spiciness without turning our mouths into infernos. In other words, our taste buds enjoyed a delightful little waltz.
My wife opted for the ramen and I went for the chicken katsu curry. Both dishes were delicious, although not life-changing. The accompanying matcha latte, still water, and soba tea washed down our meals nicely, offering a refreshing reprieve from our otherwise full-flavored escapade.
We appreciated that the food was reasonably priced, allowing our wallets to save their energy for the impending retail adventure at Westgate Oxford.
As we concluded our meal, a 12.5% service charge was added to our bill. Considering the attentive service provided by Hari and the rest of the staff, we had no qualms about paying it.
Shoryu Ramen offers tasty food and attentive service that create a satisfying experience without completely stealing the spotlight. We hope to visit again in the future, and look forward to seeing if those spicy buns can continue walking the fine line between invigorating and...
