Every time we return to Plymouth, we make it a point to visit the beloved Steak & Omelette, our go-to steakhouse. Our last night in the city during this visit happened to be on a Thursday, and we wanted to ensure it was a memorable one, so we chose the S&O. As always, it did not disappoint.
For 5 generations, our family has cherished this establishment, gathering here for family reunions, birthdays, quick lunches, and many rounds of G&Ts since its opening in the 1960s. Needless to say, our love for it runs deep.
The warm welcome we receive upon arrival always makes us feel at home, and the service is consistently cheerful, attentive, and caring. Philip, we miss you, but your colleagues are carrying on your legacy with pride!
We started our meal with calamari, mussels, and scallops. Each dish was perfectly cooked, with tender calamari boasting a golden, crispy coating. The scallops were served on their actual shells, a testament to their freshness. The mussels, cooked in a cream and white wine sauce with a touch of fresh rosemary, were a delightful surprise. Despite having enjoyed mussels in various countries and restaurants, we had never experienced them with rosemary before, and it was a winning combination. Everything was absolutely delicious.
For our main course, we decided to share the Côte de Boeuf among the three of us. Cooked to a perfect medium and accompanied by chips, peas, grilled tomatoes, and Al's Onions (a must-try!), it was a true and honest culinary dream. While various sauce options were available, I prefer my quality steak served simply.
To complement our meal, we chose a Primitivo di Manduria (62 anniversario). Being fans of Primitivo, we were delighted by its exceptional quality and how well it paired with our food.
In summary, it was yet another fantastic dinner at this genuinely friendly restaurant, with a front-of-house staff that truly takes care of you, and talented chefs (thank you, Josh!). We extend our gratitude to the entire team for never failing to impress. We can't wait to return home to Plymouth and indulge in the delights of the Steak &...

Food & Drink 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Having been a patron of the Steak and Omelette Bar for over 40 years(!), I actually know little about their menu, apart from the fact, that in my humble opinion, they have the best Angus Steaks in Plymouth. I've never had a bad meal here, and the chips are amazing. We usually only have a main course, as we're too full for anything else, but on this occasion (someone else was paying!) we attempted the three courses. All were really good. The homemade banoffee pie is to die for!
Ambience 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ We visited on a Tuesday early evening, the day after the COVID-19 Eat out to Help Out offer had ended, and it was still fairly busy. However, the restaurant has been very well laid out to cope with social distancing while maintaining a good ambience.
Accessibility 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The entrance, toilets and seating area are wheelchair accessible and on the same level, although the toilets are quite small and look like they could do with modernising. Perfect clean, and OK though.
Cost 4/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐ The cost of the food and drinks is in line with what I would expect to pay for a restaurant meal in Plymouth. The bill came to ~£150 for 4 people, but considering two of us had the most expensive steaks, this wasn't bad.
Service 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The service was is always excellent here. It seems that every one of their staff is engaging, funny and knowledgeable.
Summary 5/5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ The Steak & Omelette Bar is one of the mainstays of my Plymouth restaurant experience. It had failed to disappoint me in over 40 years, and keeps going strong. The steaks are the best in Plymouth, and we will keep coming back as long as...
Read moreWe went for a lovely night away in Plymouth Christmas shopping and saw this restaurant. Looked very nice from the outside with a great menu so decided to eat there . The male member of staff who served us was such a nice friendly guy . We looked at the menu and to my great delight they were serving lemon sole , my favourite dish of all time . We had a great starter and my partners steak was delicious but I was very disappointment in the fish , it just didn’t taste right. Something was wrong ,not the fresh delicate taste I’m used to . The owner ( I think he was the owner ) came over as he noticed I wasn’t eating it ,I told him I wasn’t enjoying the taste to which he took it way and then told me , I had really upset the chef and that he thought it tasted alright!! I was very surprised by his response as I have a business myself, I would never speak to a customer like this as the customer is always right. I then proceeded to order a steak as I thought this was a safe bet when the bill came. I was a little surprised to see that I was charged a full price for both meals. In total, we spent £150 . I think the owner is very rude and we will not be coming back again. We were made to feel very awkward and uncomfortable. Also, another member of staff actually said to us, it must’ve been...
