I spent a lively morning at Plymouth Market on Cornwall Street, and came away very impressed. With over 150 stalls under one roof, this is one of Plymouth’s best spots for fresh food, unique finds, and real local character.
From the moment I walked in, I appreciated how bright and well-laid-out the space is. The modernist building, with its scalloped roof and natural light flooding through rooflights, creates a sense of openness. The aisles are spacious enough to browse without feeling cramped, though during busier times crowds do build around popular food stalls.
The variety of stalls is excellent. I found plenty of fresh produce, fishmongers (like The Market Plaice), butchers, and fruit & veg of good quality. There are also stalls selling souvenirs, clothes, gifts, artisan crafts and things you don’t always see in big shopping centres—some real hidden gems. For food, the market delivers: international choices (Turkish, Thai, etc.), satisfying street-food style stalls, baked goods and sweets.
Practical things are good too. The market is open six days a week (Monday-Saturday), from early morning until late afternoon (closed Sundays). There’s parking right at the market car park, though it fills up fast.
If I were to fault anything, perhaps some stallholders have varying opening hours so you might find your favourite vendor closed unexpectedly. Also, at peak times it’s noisy and busy, which is part of the charm but could be overwhelming if you prefer quiet browsing.
All told, Plymouth Market is a vibrant, authentic place to shop, eat, and soak up...
Read moreCan't believe there is still this sort of market around. So many different and quirky stalls got a couple of Xmas presents . The only thing that spoiled it was the very rude cafe owner down stairs .we wanted breakfast for all 6 of us after a late night the teens were tired we were completing a purchase at the next stall so I told them to sit down at a table . After a couple of minutes they came out. One of the customers had complained about them sitting at a table the owner was very rude as I walked towards it I saw they only did cash. I knew I would have enough cash as I use card mainly. We saw there was another upstairs. So we took our custom there 6 breakfasts with drinks and extras a decent sized order for any business . The owner there completely different. Friendly order cooked to preferences. And delicious. So if you go pop upstairs avoid the owner downstairs who doesn't value her customers. there is a lift as well so even me on my sticks...
Read moreLocal architects Walls and Pearn, alongside their innovative structural engineer Albin Chronowicz, created the masterful Pannier Market. Influenced by the 1951 Festival of Britain architecture, the Pannier Market is a marvel of engineering. It features seven 12 meter high and 46 meter long spans which supports not only a cavernous market hall without a single pillar, but also a window-filled curved roof inspired by the strength and shape of shells. The north side is defined by huge windows and also includes an upper level restaurant section. Recently restored with a £3.5million grant from Plymouth City Council in 2018, the building also contains fabulous entrance murals by David Weeks which have survived since...
