To behonest this is not my first time at the rodeo. I have had the pleasure of eating at the India Gate before. But as an update on my previous review I would like to assess if it is still the best Indian restaurant in portsmouth.
Ratings are as follows.
Atmosphere: 8/10 There are not really any beautiful views outside of the windows however the decor makes up for this with soft lighting, and flawless tableware. One suggestion I would have for this restaurant is that they adjust the music a little to give it more of an Indian feel because I maybe wrong but if I go to a Indian I want to feel like I am in India even a little bit. Also I could barely hear the music at all as it needed to be a little louder. Apart from these notes it is a great little place with a bar also
Food and Drink: 8 In all honesty I could not really rate the food I had any higher as it was superb. I had poppadoms with chutney and such (as seen in the photo) the condiments were great and the poppadoms still warm. For my main I chose the Lamb shatkora and trust me when I say this that if you love lamb then go for it as the Lamb is tender and has just the right amount of fat. With the sour spiciness of this curry I complimented it with the mushroom rice which was not greasy at all. The peshwari naan that I had was also delightful and not too overpowering. Lamb Shatkora + Mushroom rice + Peshwari = excellent combination.
The drink I started off with however distracted me. I asked for a ruby port (Cockburns) and when I received it I was a bit disappointed to see ice in the glass. It might only be a little thing but if you have a bar then there is a great need to know that if you serve port you don't add ice as watered down port isn't very pleasant. That is the reason why the score is not a 10 for food and drink. Therefore if you go hear explain how you want your drink served.
Service:8/10 Nothing really to complain about except for the time it took from poppadoms to main meal. It was a good 45 minutes. Another point was overhearing the staff member saying "You can't please some people" Not a massive issue but if I can remember it then it takes away from my remembrance of the night
Overall 8/10
If they can sort the music and the bar out for next time then i will be more than happy to review again in the future because everything else was great. I really wanted to rate this...
Read moreI used to order from this restaurant all the time. It had great quality food and excellent customer service. The food has more or less stayed the same. The customer service however is shocking. Two deliveries in a row I have had 2 incredibly rude delivery drivers. They take my phone number so I assume they will call when on their way to my address. Today the driver phoned and just said 'you have not answered your door.' I then replied saying I was on my way downstairs to open the door for him. At this point he was not even outside. He then emerged from his car to give me my order and simply said 'Are you sleeping or something?' He then says he was waiting for 5 minutes and slings my food at me and just turns away shaking his head. I then said thank you to him and he just replied saying 'your welcome' in an extremely rude manor. I loved this restaurant and it's incredible customer service. The owner was always incredibly nice to me and my girlfriend and I have even had a few birthday meals there. However, I cannot say I will be doing this anymore, I will be looking for another Indian restaurant/takeaway as I feel this is not the same restaurant I used to really enjoy. Such a shame as I'm sure the owner would be disappointed as he is such a...
Read moreI wouldn’t even rate it 1 star! This was the first time we went to this restaurant as we wanted a curry. Firstly when we got there we realised that there was only 1 member of staff working in the restaurant. He was also in the kitchen cooking and serving and taking orders. The service was absolutely rubbish. Our drinks weren’t all bought out to the table together. Our mains came out and the curries all came first and we had to wait for about 15 minutes for the naan bread. By the time the naan arrived the curry had gone cold. And the naan wasn’t even cooked. The owner himself was so rude and had no customer service skills or manners at all. They had a delivery driver bringing food out to the table and he didn’t even know what the dishes where and said the boss said it’s for the INDIANS table which is racist i would say! When we tried talking to him about the bill he got rude and he said don’t need to come out. We didn’t say we didn’t want to pay but said as a good will gesture he should do something for us. As we had to be somewhere we just paid and after taking the payment he just chucked the bank card to us! Never ever going back there and wouldn’t recommend...
