Food upset my stomach
Came here during lockdown for a takeout burrito - I’m a big fan of Mexican eating and cooking it regularly. The place is a bit like subway but for Mexican street food.
Staff were smiley, enthusiastic and attentive. But it was all about the up-sell “do you want X it’s only £1 more” clearly a forced corporate tactic considering 3 people served me at different stations all with the same dialogue - felt pushy and not a nice experience. And it’s disappointing how much is on the up-sell list! Cheese sauce, chorizo, guacamole, beef. Sour cream or cheese, not both without more £! Without the extras your burrito would be meat, rice, cheese or sour cream not (both!) salsa... pretty tasteless.
They only had medium wraps in stock too... I know it’s lockdown so maybe supply chain problems
I chose: Tomato rice (rice was coloured but no tomato chunks visible) Pulled pork (the pot it was in looked overly watery or greasy, either way a bit too liquidy for the aesthetic & it certainly lacked flavour) Pinto beans (a mustard yellow colour, low in flavour and ingredient variety) Cheese sauce (runny - showing a lack of cheese to liquid ratio) Chorizo (full bodied, smoky, cooked well, sizzling best ingredient on display) Sour cream (extremely runny, was really shocked when it ran all out over the preparation area, authentic sour cream would have a more solid texture almost - lacked flavour) Hot salsa (high liquid content mixture was visibly watery or greasy, lacked texture and solids, resembled more of a hot sauce than salsa, good spicy flavour though). No option to put salad or nachos in the burrito for a bit of crunch! £8 Over all, ingredients resembled more a cheap array than appetising quality.
Burrito was then squashed down with more runny ingredients leaking out all over the place. Burrito was then wrapped with 2 pieces of foil in opposite ways (portrait then landscape - this is good for security on those runny ingredients but makes for a messy and difficult eating experience... certainly not easy on-the-go friendly)
4 hours after, my tummy started feeling bloated and gassy.
This place is all about margin. Cheap ingredients and make the customer pay more than the basic price for it. My recommendation is to head 2 blocks further down the high street to Taco Bell - better value (2 burritos for £8 and they have crunch to them!), better nights sleep for...
Read moreLike the earlier reviewer Shruti, I was totally disappointed with this place that I visit regularly and have a loyalty card. I have not been for a few months. I go at lunchtime from work and normally have the naked burrito box. I went in to order and was told rudely to order at the new screens. I followed the on screen menu.
I always order the double chicken with coriander rice and black beans with avocado and green chillies. It's my go to and previously the team would always make it so nicely for me.
After ordering on the screen, what I received was the lightest little box I have ever had from there. Forget double chicken there was not even normal chicken. This time I went for the roasted veggies. When I received the box I told asked where the roasted veggies were and the girl at the counter said its under the rice. I said I ordered double chicken to which she said its also under the rice.
I didn't seem content but was getting late to work. I got back to work open the box and under the rice there was one strip of a yellow pepper as my roasted veggies and no additional chicken. A teaspoon of avocado was the treat on top. I paid £12.75 for this pathetic little box of two big spoons of rice, a sprinkle of chicken and a yellow pepper strip. You should be ashamed of yourselves and if nothing gets done the reviews will keep coming. I can see them already giving you 1 star ratings..
This is appalling, I am thoroughly disappointed at this level of service. Tortilla you are going down the route of all other shops and restaurants...rip off the customer and give absolutely nothing for it. Don't fob me off like Shruti to tell me to fill out a complaints form, find out who deals with your customers like that and have them fired. Your rep and name is on the line and if you continue like this you won't have any customers left, which means no profit, which means no premises, which means no job.
I will never go here again and my loyalty card and go and stick it.
Good luck to you and...
Read moreYou can find my previous review below. Need to update the review because of my shocking experience yesterday at around 13:10. The new kisoks are useless, they do not let me pick my usual order, aka that last option where you can pick lettuce and other side things. So I go up to the front, saying I cannot order at the kiosk because I can't get my normal order, I don't paid paying more but I would like my normal order. The attitude of your employee saying "Use the kiosk, if the kiosk doesn't allow it, you can't order it". Absolutely no help, no other choice, nothing. I get the system of kiosk is not their fault but also you don't have to be rude about it.
This place just keeps going down hill, first the £9 for a burrito, then the smaller portions, then the dumb kisoks and now a rude employee. That hot sauce is amazing, but I would rather learn to make it, then deal with your staff or kiosks again.
(previous review below)
I love mexican food so much, which is why one of my favourite places to go for a quick bite is Tortilla. I have ate at the Cardiff, Stratford, central London and Birmingham Tortilla branches. However, I was very disappointed at the one in Reading, the portion was so small, the server give me half a spoon of chicken and when I asked if I can have the roast vegetables with my chicken, something I always do with other Tortilla restaurant. The server flat out said "No, that is only for vegetarians". Now I don't even mind paying extra, because I love having the roast vegetables. The half spoon of chicken and no vegetables just meant I was unhappy with my meal. It was very disappointing and I left hungry after paying over £7 for...
