Staying in the market house hotel in Reading uk.... I have been here for more than 15 days because my house is undergoing maintenance and repairs, everything started very well, they gave us a beautiful room at the hotel ti start, then went down hill, unfortunatelly ! Miss Andrea manager, and the cleaners have a more than disrespectful and disastrous character, it is a pity that such a nice hotel has such bad attention, the customer service is it has a lack of respect, and the hypocrisy is enormous in the service, at first we thought it was good but it was all a lie, sometimes you thinks that longer is the stay, the better it will do the service. To say that we put the do not disturb sign because we had worked until very late and at 9 in the morning, they did not knock on the door, they entered without knocking, I repeat having the do not disturb sign! Enter with ni knoking. Sometimes we spend up to three or four days without having room service, because we ourselves said we dint need it, not to disturb them. And at the time of checkout they claim that we asked for delivery food and that they dint like to have same people for long time coz the room does not have windows so it smelled of food! And they neather have any stractor, ( Wonder if that is up the law *no Windows, no extractors) So it is our fault that the hotel does not have an extractor fan or a window? And if we have food, obviously there is going to be garbage and we put it in a bag so then the cleaning lady can take it away! One day in one room, the coffee maker does not work, in the other the coffee maker was not in there, and in the other the room the shower did not work and the other did not have towells, and we did not claim of anything!!! But Andrea and the cleaning girls tell us that we have to leave a hotel room more than clean when we haven't even complained about anything and we haven't used the cleaning service for the room. But obviously when one leaves there is garbage and I have example photos attach. And! Look the other reviews even they chance a weeding for the horrible and fake service. We are doing a blog for stays for more than 5 days coz all is different from day 1. I dont want to harm their Jobs just fell bad for the owners invest in a beautiful place and employees harm it. And hope they understand they are in customer service job, so the world said already everithing. Will improve their selfs and start to at leas no be so arrogant. In other worlds Rooms are nice and stay less than 3 days...

Good new venue and great space inside a former bank with great, friendly staff, but some real catering problems. As with any bar or restaurant these days it will probably succeed on the back of the 24 rooms upstairs.

The bar was dreadful. Only one cider was available - I’d have expected a couple on tap and three or four more non flavoured options in bottles. There was no Prosecco! (WTF ? How do you serve an Aperol spritz, the current de rigour drink ?) This is a bar without drinks.

The venue has a couple of visiting kitchens (one of which was empty on the Saturday when we visited) and its own, which is just dreadful. My wife and sister in law ordered some pork kebabs that were just inedible with no dip and a side salad of pulses with no dressing. Try eating dry pulses with some pomegranate seeds and uncooked broccoli ... They both left their meals totally uneaten vowing to never return.

The prices for food are very cheap, and my Caribbean mutton curry from the independent vendor was fantastic.

However, for an established catering group opening a new venue, such basic issues do not bode well. With the competition around you have to get everything right and Market House is barely half way there. They should start with reviewing their drinks and in house catering. Or they can just be complacent and count the money coming in from...

I usually love a stay here but was disgusted yesterday that I had to explain my disability in order to trying to get help getting drinks, then when they came I was served prosecco not the champagne I asked for which actually caused me to have mental health crisis and an allergic reaction, the staff when I asked to have a drink later did not ensure I was told closing time of the bar and I nearly missed getting a drink, when I told staff this morning i wasn't even asked what they could do to help or make this better when they have done so well previously in the past.

The offer I had booked under wasn't actually accredited credits to me so is a shame and bad advertising!?

The room actually even had a spoon left on a sofa? And extremely noisy from the street I would definitely request a different room in future. But actually wondering if I want to go back... :/

Where they have normally excelled and I can't give high enough creditz I probably can not out to words how awful my experience was yesterday and this morning.

The lift not working was a shame but manageable for me, I had to ask for extra towels which they nearly always accommodate. I am usually so happy here but I had a really horrible and disheartening experience yesterday with customer service seriously...

BE AWARE WHEN BOOKING: many of the cosy and comfy room options do not have a windows. They essentially have frosted glass panels in which little light can enter the room with no way to open them to let fresh air in. It’s unclear whether these glass panels actually face the outside of the building or whether they are simply decorative with lights behind to create a illusion of a window. This is not advertised on their website or third party booking sites. When this was mentioned to reception staff they stated that this was “reflected in the price of the room” and were unwilling to provide any further assistance. This was a terrible shame as the location is brilliant and the decoration of the hotel is lovely. We would not have booked the room had we known this was the case. On a positive note the hotel was spotless so clearly the cleaning staff are very competent and they seemed friendly in passing! The same cannot be said for the reception staff. We did not visit the bar on this particular visit but seemed lively! Certainly the top floor of the hotel was soundproofed from the bar but I am unsure about the first floor. All in all I would suggest to ask at point of booking for a room with a functioning window otherwise you will be in a, albeit well decorated, prison cell.

The Market House on Market Place in Reading town centre is really quite a funky and different venue. The building itself is an old bank and the function room out the bank is in what was the old vault - albeit with a big chunk of the ceiling literally hacked off! As you come in through the main entrance you go past the lift and the stairs and through into a very high ceiling main room where the bar is and also where the kitchen is. The theme is industrial through and through and works really well. Spacious is definitely the key word here. There is an upstairs mezzanine type area which is an extension to the main room. Toilets are downstairs in what can only be described as some bizarre Nightmare on Elm Street type corridor. This is a good thing you will see what I mean for yourself. I’ve only been once and didn’t know this place existed but definitely going back. Really like the place from a drinks venue perspective. Food was good we had pizzas. Recommended.
