Went for lunch with my Grandmother, who lives in Rayleigh and has been to this venue a number of times.

As it was a warm day, we sat outside, but close to the building. There were a good number of other diners, showing how popular the place is, with plenty of seating options, as well as seating inside.

My Grandmother selected from the seniors, two course, options, choosing fish and chips, followed by ice cream (£6.99), whilst I had a cheeseburger from the lunch meal deals, which meant it came with chips and a drink for £8.49.

The food arrived within a reasonable time and was nicely presented, though my Grandmother’s fish was very small, meaning it was quite a lot of batter and not much fish. Despite this, she said it was nice and was enough for her. The burger was tasty and the fries were also nice.

Unfortunately, the table we sat at seemed to have gnats or something hiding underneath as I was bitten on the ankles about three times whilst there, which dampened my enjoyment, and there was also a yapping dog at another table, which annoyed my Grandmother!

After our main meal, the ice cream was brought out, which we shared. This was a nice end to the meal on a warm day.

Overall, food is good, reasonably priced and staff are friendly and helpful. There are a variety of seating areas, including accessible seating inside and out.

Toilets are nicely decorated and were clean and tidy.

The downside is there is limited parking, so it’s best to walk if you can, or try parking in the street nearby. As my Grandmother has limited mobility, this wasn’t an option for us, but fortunately I have a small car and was able to squeeze in next to the bins!

Suitable for families; children’s...

42 years ago I met my husband at the pub so have very fond memories of this place . We travelled down from Tewksbury this weekend to meet family for a brunch after hearing good reviews of their food and the fact they catered for Coeliacs . On arrival the place looked clean and pleasant and the staff ie Ben the barman and the manager were very welcoming ,all settled at our table so we thought we were really in for a lovely time . First problem was they couldn’t provide any gluten free food for brunch at all , I reluctantly accepted that I had to ordered a gammon egg peas and potatoes as I didn’t want to cause a fuss but not ideal for that early in the day . The family ordered a breakfast wrap ,several big breakfasts and a traditional breakfast and could he swap the beans for mushrooms on the traditional. The manager said sorry we don’t do any swaps as the stock wouldn’t balance , we don’t have mushrooms although they appeared on the menu , sorry we don’t have any beans as we have run out also sorry we don’t do any breakfast wraps anymore although they are on the menu . At that point the we realised it was going to be a great disappointment. It was suggested by the Manager we could return another day if we were in the area and they could cater for us ., but it wouldn’t change the fact they couldn’t cater for a gluten free or do what’s on the menu . GREENKING we weren’t impressed , you cater brunch for vegans, vegetarians ( which is a life choice) but not for coeliacs who have to be gluten free for life .You need to look at your menus and make sure you can provide what’s on them .The 4 hrs journey down to Rayleigh wasn’t worth it and we can’t comment on the food as we didn’t get to taste it...

We held my wife’s 50th Birthday at the Paul Pry based on the great reviews and wasn’t disappointed! Rob, Sheril and team were exceptional from the start, with nothing too much trouble. We booked well in advance for 60 - 70 guests with food and drink on a Saturday night, which we thought would be a problem, but far from it. We were given a large area facing the bar cordoned off specifically for our use, which was well monitored by staff and especially Rob, who was just amazing. We also had part of the car park divided off for a gaming bus for the children who throughly enjoyed the experience, giving parents time and space to eat and drink without being pestered.

We went for the food platters, which were fresh, well presented and very tasty for a very reasonable price, which everyone commented on, saying how lovely they were! We did a voucher system for paying for drinks, which the bar staff were brilliant with. The music choices were spot on and the ambiance overall was fantastic. I highly recommend the Paul Pry for your function or event so don’t be put off by the pub persona………..Great venue, superb staff, fantastic food and management that truly care you have the best time possible. Thank you so much for making my wife’s birthday so very special. Happy wife,...

I visited yesterday and my eye was taken to the Seniors menu. Three courses for £7.99! I had soup of the day, tomato and red pepper. Bangers Mash and peas and finished with chocolate brownie and vanilla ice cream. The portions were adequate and the quality good. This is amazing value for money. The pub is comfortable and friendly and yesterday Billy ‘The bar’ was running operations guiding like minded diners through their options. Not Michelin starred but very good value. Oh! I forgot to say the Green King IPA deserved a CAMRA accolade.
