You smell the Deanston Bakery, before you get near the door. The aroma of fresh bread, mingled with the sweetness of warm cinnamon buns, hooks your senses. Yuri bakes bread, cakes, savouries, each one more enticing than the last. Yuri chats away, while kneading the ingredients. Just watching him craft, and create, brings an indescribable feeling of serenity. The sourdough, is the real deal, the cheddar and garlic bread, has large dollops of cheese woven into it. The rye bread gives your jaw a workout. He makes a bread, using the deliciously tasting non homogenised milk, from Mossgiel Family Farm. Today I had a mushroom, cheddar, and truffle oil tart. Quite honestly, I've never tasted anything like it elsewhere. Cakes, biscuits, brownies, all made daily on the premises, make this the one of the best bakeries for miles around. I travel 7km in each direction, to get my supplies. Yuri is from the Ukraine, and has mastered the "art" of baking the perfect bagel. None of the soft doughy imitations that are ubiquitous. These are like the bagels you got from the Jewish delicatessens that used to be in Glasgow, but even better. A mug of their coffee, and a bagel in either hand lets you feel that you are in the continent. The one downside is that the Deanston Bakery is only open Wednesday through to Saturday. Whether you are local, or from farther afield, this is...
Read moreThe Shawlands/Strathbungo area was crying out for a high quality baker, and Yuri @ Deanston Bakery answered the call.
The small shop is easily identified by the dedicated line of customers in its fast moving queue, clouded with the smell of warmed cinnamon sugar from the buns. Deanston Bakery offers real, true and honest sourdough bread, containing only flour, water and salt. Not the yeasted sourdough junk offered by the well known supermarkets. His ever expanding array of yeasted buns (cinnamon, mocha, cocoa and special guest appearances from rhubarb and apple crumble among others) and the addition of some ENORMOUS prepared sourdough sandwiches with their immense flavour of both bread and filling.
This is no patisserie with its beautiful array of delicate GBBO-style aesthetic masterpieces. It is bold, generous, almost simple baking executed with exceptional skill and ability.
If you want a cheap white loaf, or a factory manufactured doughnut, the high street names will scratch your itch. But if you want rustic, delicious and substantial baked goods underpinned with an exceptional ability to select complementary flavours, check out Deanston Bakery.
Don't miss: the chicken and chorizo sourdough sandwiches, the vast array of sweet and savoury buns (which never quite make it home without being...
Read moreI absolutely love this bakery! It was recommended to me by a lovely lady at a shop. The quality and the diversity of the pastries is out of this world. They offer some vegan options that are no different from the non-vegan ones. I've had both. And my friends who don't live in Shawlands keep asking me for more goods from Deanston bakery.
I especially love the sweet rolls. They're soft, buttery, and flavorful. Their texture combined with the quality of the ingredients will have you eating them before you get the chance to make it back home and make coffee.
Their cardamom and mocha rolls are dreamy.
And the staff is so kind, amicable. They make you feel welcome and bubbly (I should know this as a newcomer...
