Anyone remember the good old days of Bar Gumbo in Byres Road? It was a sad day when they closed their doors, but! The good news is, the food whisperer behind some of their mouth watering dishes is now whipping up some classic (and new) dishes at Po’Boyz!

The location is a little odd, next to a Papa Johns and a Greggs, but on the plus side, there’s plenty of parking available. Although there is seating inside, they also have an outdoor section (for the better weather) and even do takeaways. Inside, décor is Southern soul meets Glasgow grit, and on arrival the owner was incredibly friendly, allowing us the pick of available seating.

For food we had Chicken Tenders, the Pulled Pork Hot Dog, Corn on the Cob, hand cut chips and of course, the Beef Brisket Po’boy (one of my favourites from Bar Gumbo). And WOW, the Po’boy brought back so many memories! It tasted just as good as it did all those years ago; smoky, tender, fresh and with a nice crunch of slaw. The tenders were crisp, chunky and had an almost Pakora vibe, and the hand cut chips, THE HAND CUT CHIPS!! Less of a side-piece and more of a headliner! Incredible flavour. The charred corn was also a hit with us. The Pulled Pork Hot Dog tasted good (according to my daughter) although it looked a little basic to me.

Price-wise we were just under £50 for the 3 of us, including soft drinks. Which I was more than happy with. They don’t accept card, but you can do a bank transfer (if you have online banking), or cash also works (card machine just outside the restaurant). They are also dog friendly, which was a big plus for us!

Great food, reasonable prices and a lovely owner that made us feel...

didn’t like the pizzas.in my opinion the pizza base was bought in from a cheap supplier.I feel the pizza was made up from the cheapest grade of mozzarella in my opinion. It was an awful pizza compared to paesano pizza I feel was like eating a cheese toaster. The coffee was good. For desert I felt it was cheap ice cream, cream was from spray in a can I believe. The cheesecake was like something in my opinion that you would buy from Iceland. Yea The apple pie was not to my liking hard crust and slightly burnt and no doubt bought in cheap I presume. Expensive for what in my opinion was bought from cheap cash and carries or the like..I’m my opinion it’s like a snack bar used with convenience foods and run on wee tiny ovens microwaves etc.I don’t believe there’s a proper chef who cooks from scratch. I work and run kitchens myself and I won’t be returning only for the lovely coffee they make.I’ve been eating out for years and never been asked to pay in...

We have just returned from Po'Boyz after having a delicious meal, we both had pizza's, he had the double pepperoni and I had the BBQ, we got fries on the side and the Hush puppies, which were so delicious that we scoffed them before anything else, so the owner brought us another portion! We are already planning another visit for my dad's birthday, because we noticed they do ribs, dad loves ribs, and we want to try the burgers and of course the Mac and cheese side. Can't wait to come back. I wish we asked the owners name, he was lovely, he looked after us, especially with that extra portion of hush puppies, thanks again!
