Came here for a meal and a drink with a work colleague here last night. This was the first time I have visited it since the days of the Old Monk. I like the place. It has a bit of a Bavarian Bierkeller theme going on, with lines of people sitting at long wooden tables. But there are also tables for two and booths. Despite the fact it was a Wednesday tea time, the place was busy, so we got the last available table. But clearly, reserving a table is not a problem. There are some interesting beers on offer. Bar and food staff were all friendly, helpful, and relaxed, and the service was prompt for beers and food delivery. The food was very nice, and most importantly, filling! What I liked was the fact that the quantities were generous and it was good value for money. Our only problem on this occasion was that we were sat eating at a table for two next to a space which was used as a cut through for people walking past. This was due to the restrictive positions of the long tables, and these tables not having any gaps in between. This meant that people were often pushing past us to get from one end to another, and probably explains why this was the last remaining table. Like I say though, next time I will book ahead, and avoid that table. But yes on balance, great place, and...
Read moreI can’t rate this place highly enough, we visited on an extremely rainy and busy Saturday afternoon, the staff were quick, friendly, bubbly, all smiles and extremely handy with a squidgee (had to dry the benches somehow during very heavy showers of rain and only outside service allowed due to covid regulations)
At a time when most pubs around are only taking bookings we were seated under an umbrella on a table outside straightaway from a spur of the moment decision on this establishment, the pub was table service only which understandable at the moment but the food was delicious.
Covid regulations were all kept to amazingly well, the drinks were good, and the customer service is first rate (I saw a member of staff covering someone else’s drinks with his hat on the way to the table to protect them from the rain when he could have kept himself dry).
As someone who works in the hospitality industry and in a customer service role myself I think the staff there should be proud of themselves in how the conduct their business and I hope google lets them see this to...
Read moreI always enjoy calling in here for a pint. A big old building which is nicely situated near the Crucible and close to the Novotel and Mercure, it fits in well. There's a nice big bar in the centre serving a huge range of drinks - including at least one gluten free beer on draught (my fave is Magic Rock's Saucery). The staff are pleasant and helpful when it comes to explaining the beer types. Although not tried so far, I understand they serve gluten free options in their food offerings. A wealth of TV screens surround the bar area showing sport, which has an added atmosphere when the world snooker championships are being played next door! It can get extremely busy, which is great to see so, if you don't want the hustle and bustle when getting to the bar, try a weekday afternoon for a more...
