Surprised in all the right ways by a little bit of Malaysia in this little corner of Sheffield. Many mamak dishes available here and - in my opinion - they're faithfully reproduced, but that doesn't mean you should give it as miss if you're not familiar with Malaysian food. If you're a student wanting a cheap lunch or quick snack you'll be just as welcome and just as well fed as anyone who knows the native names for each dish. I've put English translations in brackets for your convenience.

This is the first time I've seen Nasi Lamak (coconut rice) outside of peninsular Malaysia, but the choices for what to go with it are all as you'd expect, including the addition of a tomato option for vegetarian as well as the more traditional tofu offering. If not, you've got beef rendang, curry, chicken at your discretion, as well as a few others I didn't take note of. The rice absolutely hits the spot and the spiciness of the side dishes was definitely suited to my - admittedly somewhat weak - palate.

The headline dishes are Mee Kari Udang (Shrimp Curry Noodle), Mee Soto Ayam (Chicken Noodle Soup) and Satay Ayam (Chicken sticks with Penut sauce), all decent sized and up for about £5. Of course you've also got Roti Canai (a sweet, tearable bread-like thing) if that's your kind of thing. I would tell you what that was like, but my sister refused to let me sample it and had it all for herself. I therefore assume it to be excellent.

There's even cendol (a sweet and refreshing crushed ice thing that can look bizzare to brits at first, but trust me it's delicious) for desert, which the Malay staff were more than happy to delight us with.

The Teh Tarik (Think of it like a sweeter tea) is served hot but that's more than welcome on a cold day, and the sirap (AKA 'syrup', also very sweet and milky but with a rose taste - imagine subtle liquified Turkish Delight) as good as I remember! Canned drinks are available if you're not willing to try any of the native beverages just yet.

The staff - who appear to be a Malay family - are very nice and accommodating, service was quick, and the only negative I can think of is that if they keep up the good work, they're going to need...

🌟 5/5 Nasi Lemak Comas – Zurul Malaysian Café is where your taste buds go for a holiday and your waistline files a complaint.

I walked into Zurul Malaysian Café thinking I’d have a “light lunch.” HA! The only thing light about this place is the speed at which my plate became empty.

Let’s start with the service. The waiter greeted me like I was a long-lost cousin who owed him money but he forgave me because the roti canai was that good. Friendly, fast, and somehow managed to convince me to order Teh Tarik even though I originally came in just for a coffee. That Teh Tarik was so frothy I’m convinced they hired a cloud as a barista.

I ordered their signature chicken noodles and what arrived was not just a dish—it was an edible work of art. The sambal was so spicy it made me question my life choices, but in the best way possible. One bite of the crispy anchovies and I suddenly understood why people write love songs.

Their Char Kway Teow? Smoky, saucy, and so packed with flavour I nearly proposed to the chef. Honestly, the wok hei (that magical charred aroma) was so strong I think my hair now smells like it.

And don’t get me started on dessert. The Cendol had me slurping green jelly like I was auditioning for a role in Malaysian Foodie: The Musical.

Final verdict? 💥 Zurul Malaysian Café is dangerously delicious. Bring stretchy trousers. Bring a friend. Bring your regrets—you’ll leave them behind after the...

Not the best pictures😅 I want to apologise in advance but I had to share this with you😉

I was passing by and @zurulmalaysiancafe has been on our list for a while so finally got something from them to try at home but Susana also agreed we have to pop in there ASAP!

🍛 I got rainbow rice with beef rendang and chicken curry

😍 The moment I stepped inside their little restaurant it smelt so good that I was feeling a bit guilty for not trying more dishes 🤣

😋 The dish I picked was delicious!!! It tasted fresh, good portion, had the right amount of spices, and was very fragrant, and well-balanced, all for a very good price!

Add this place to your list! They don't have many seats available but don't worry: they will pack your food properly 😋

☺️ Don't order only one dish like me 🤣 because you will crave more as soon as you start it.

🌱Vegetarian options are available and this place is...

I’ve been here about 5 times but finally decided to drop a review. I’ve tried basically everything on the menu other than the Kuih selection and Rotis. The menu items could be refined (they taste homemade) but they all taste authentically Malaysian. I had the Nasi Lemak Ayam Percik (7£) and Teh Tarik (2£). The Nasi Lemak is good though I wish the anchovies and chicken had a bigger portion, the teh tarik is amazing as always. This café is close to my heart as it’s the only place here that I can get a taste of home, so my review is somewhat biased. There are a lot of improvements made constantly, which is noticeable every time I’ve walked in. So for that I look past the waiting time. It’s just a small business trying its best to promote Malaysian food, I feel happy to support and witness its growth.
