I had the displeasure of dealing with The Dartmouth Arms recently, and it was an absolute nightmare from start to finish. My partner and I had made a reservation earlier in the day, enticed by the lovely photos online. But when we arrived, we were shocked to find the place looking and smelling like a complete dump. It was so bad that we couldn't even bring ourselves to step inside.
To spare the owners and staff from hearing the brutal truth, we called to cancel instead. It was a busy time, and we canceled a few hours before our reservation, thinking that would be the end of it. But no, this was just the beginning of the ordeal.
Later on, I was shocked to find a £40 cancellation fee charged to my card. This fee was never communicated when we booked or when we canceled. What had been communicated was a ‘no-show’ charge, but since we canceled, I thought we were in the clear. When I called to inquire, I was told, “the owner decided he wants to charge you.” That’s it. No reason, no explanation, just the owner whimsically deciding to take money for absolutely nothing.
Given some of the other reviews I've seen, I can only assume this was a ploy to fund another one of the owner’s “sessions,” as it seems he has a reputation for that. This is a deplorable way to run a business—scamming customers with hidden fees and treating them like cash cows.
The Dartmouth Arms is a substandard establishment with despicable business practices. I strongly recommend avoiding this place at all costs. Save your money, time, and dignity by going somewhere that actually respects...
Read moreMy partner and I traveled to Devon for a weekend away. My partner suggested the Dartmouth Arms after looking online and having good reviews, we thought we’d give it a try. We came for lunch on Saturday (yesterday) around 1:30pm. We sat across from the bar. My partner went up to order our food and the female staff member, bluntly took our order and then proceeded to tell her colleague “I can’t get anything done because as soon as I try, someone needs serving” in front of my partner - who was very polite. Obviously upset he sat down and we waited for our food. He had a pulled pork burger and I had nachos. The nachos were okay but the pulled pork was really not nice. It looked and tasted like it had been microwaved and was very watery and bland. Neither of us enjoyed our food but due to the unpleasant service we experienced beforehand, we couldn’t be bothered to cause a fuss. It’s such a shame as this cost us over £40 and it wasn’t up to standards. If staff were nicer, this could’ve been a much nicer experience. We have both worked in hospitality so understand how difficult it can be on a busy hot weekend. However, we are both very friendly people and did not deserve any rudeness whatsoever. We are very...
Read moreThe best place I've eaten in a long time.
We around to the Dartmouth arms around 6pm,; dripping wet through and asked for a table for 4. All the empty tables were reserved but we were offered one anyway and we're given a time to leave. This was acceptable and we were happy for the option (if only to get out of the rain)
The DA was the 5th pub/restaurant we looked at it received our attention due to its menu showing GF and VG options very clearly.
For our meals, we chose 3 fajitas (one for me and one each for the kids) and a large margarita pizza for the hubster.
For mine, I asked for the fajita to be brought out without the sour cream and the guacamole (on the count of my dairy allergies) the guy taking the orders said not a problem and he'll advise the kitchen.
My meal arrived and the chef had very nicely prepared some guacamole for me without the cream and replaced the sour cream with DF cheese. The fajita was also one of tbe nicest a Fajitas I have eaten in a long time.
The pizza was also freshly made and went down a treat.
We cant recommend the Dartmouth Arms...
