I'd been raving about this place to my friend for ages and we finally had a date in the diary to go. She comes from out of town so this was going to be a nice treat.
We arrived and the waitress asked for any dietary requirements and vegan menus. We asked for two vegan menus as this was the reason I'd recommended this place so much.
We sat down and having browsed the menu asked the waitress to confirm the vegan items as most were listed with cream or cheese. She said she'd ask the chef. We ordered wine while we waited. She returned and told us none of the items on the menu were available, but they could do either a beetroot risotto or beetroot tart. Not overly imaginative, but the food tends to be good so I asked what the tart would come with. She didn't know so again went to the chef to ask.
She told us the tart would come with potatoes and green beans. I asked are there any starters we could have. She said "no". (Shortly after the table next to us were served bread with oil and vinegar which is vegan). I asked if there were any desserts. She didn't know and went again to ask the chef.
It all seemed a bit of a farce. Anyway, she returned and said they could make a gin sorbet, which was probably an accompaniment to one of the standard desserts. By this time the wine had been opened but my friend and I decided we'd go elsewhere. I told the waitress, who said, "would you like to move to the bar?" I asked why but she couldn't answer. It felt as though they just wanted the table.
We managed to get a table at another local restaurant. We drank our wine, paid and left. However on out way out the waitress said they'd be changing the menu in a couple of weeks and to come back then.
I don't think so. Overall we were extremely disappointed by the service, lack of communication and options provided. We're not certain why we were handed a menu with items on it that were...
Read moreI visited around a month ago. My friend had meat options, as a pescatarian, I went for a vegetarian main. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the upstairs and the staff are absolutely LOVELY. Especially Sarah, she made us feel really at home and comfortable with the menu. First off, the cocktails are INCREDIBLE. The barman is a wizard. Probably the best cocktails I have had outside of London. The food was really great and beautifully presented and the vegetarian options were plentiful. I would say though that my vegetarian main was a bit underwhelming. My friend said that her meaty main was INCREDIBLE though so no worries there! The deserts were otherworldly. I am often left really disappointed by deserts generally, as in a lot of restaurants they are a bit of an afterthought and a bit mediocre but these deserts were complex, rich and delicious, and again, wonderfully presented. Apart from the slightly âmehâ veggie main, the only thing stopping me from giving the Slanted Door 5 stars is that when we visited there was a real lack of social distancing and PPE in place. Both cubicles were open in the toilets and it was incredibly cramped. When I went downstairs to use the loos I was shocked at how many people were crammed into the same space downstairs at tables. None of the waitresses or bar staff wore masks and got quite close to people when presenting food and drink. The only COVID precaution that they seemed to have in place was hand sanitiser by the door and a closed bar area. Apart from that it seemed really casual and made me feel a bit uneasy. I would love to return but I would really love to see other measures put in place. If they sort this small issue, then I can confidently say that this place is fantastic, with great food and wonderful staff. If you can afford it I would highly recommend...
Read morePretty weird atmosphere when we visited last week. The manager was a bit intense and the staff were obviously new but we kind of felt like we was a bother to them. To be fair it was a bit late but we just wanted a drink after a meal and we was told to wait whilst they cleaned a table and we was ordered by the girl to go back and wait even though it only took her a few seconds. So we walked back downstairs then back up again. Fair enough rules and rules but they didnât have any test and trace going on. We then went upstairs which was empty but the manager rudely told my parents to move to another seat so he could fit another party right next to us. He did bring a group up but they would have been so close to us as he said most of the room was for dining however I doubted any one would be eating that late. But yea throw two groups right next to each other in a big empty room. I would of given a two star but they...
