Olby's Soul Cafe — Restaurant in Thanet

We found this lovely bar cum restaurant in an alley tucked away from the main road with tropical vibes and decor. I love Caribbean cuisine hence was lured in. The food is great but, for Caribbean cuisine fans like me it might be a bit disappointing and very different from the authentic/typical cuisine. This is more like Caribbean with a twist. Some dishes (jerk chicken on flatbread) was quite spicy but on the other hand, the coconut chicken is mild and sweet. I missed the rice and peas and proper jerk. The typical curries -curry goat, oxtail, curry chicken are also not in the menu. Their coleslaw is of the healthier variant without mayo and with a coriander twist. Tastes great but agin I prefer the original. The mango dips and sauces were great especially with the prawn. Staff are friendly and helpful. Starter was nice. Main arrived. One was Jerk chicken with salad and pitta. What arrived was chicken burger and fries. Sent it back. Original meal arrived a minute later. Chicken was dry and tough. The salad was drenched in sauce. The pitta was two tiny cuts of a thin wrap. Second meal was the burger. Came with onion rings and fries. The burger was pink in places inside and so thick and dry it was impossible to chew or swallow. Tried to thin it out but the meat was still dry and tough. Onion rings were cheap Iceland ones. Fries were ok but very dry again. Told waiter as we barely ate any of our meals. Got no real apology. No offer of a partial discount. Then asked if we wanted to leave a tip on the card machine. Westcoast Bar & Grill has an amazing atmosphere. It is relaxed and open, a lovely building with lots of natural wood. it is a place that as soon as you walk in you feel you are on holiday, thanks to friendly owners and staff. The food is absolutely stunning. Interesting fusion of Caribbean and Meditteranean. Tapas style so that one can snack or feast and share.
