Can't comment on the rooms service and location as I have only ever been for food and/or drinks.
After my most recent visit I decided it was finally time to post my long awaited review. I visited with my parents and precariously turned up on a Sunday without a booking. We entered and noticed an empty table without a reservation sign on it. Little did we know that they don't use reservation signs and the indication of a reservation is by the placement of cutlery. This was made aware to us when I went to pick up menus from the bar and the staff notified us. They dealt with it professionaly saying that the table was reserved but were 20minutes late. The staff called up the no shows to check if they were coming and to our luck they weren't so we got the table, winner! Long story short, if you plan to come here at a peak time, (Friday evening, Saturday or Sunday) then definitely book ahead. However, can I please request to whoever from the Brewery Tap reads these reviews that you put on 'Reserved' signed on your table please? It would avoid the confusion we experienced!
Anyways, reservation shenanigans aside, it was table service and a waiter took our drinks orders prior to food. Asked for tap water for the table, got individual glasses an no jug. Just an observation. For food, one of us ordered the homemade veggie pithivier, another the chicken roast dinner and myself the lamb roast dinner. It was noted that the chicken roast dinner didn't come with a Yorkshire Pud and would require a supplementary payment if requested. This seemed strange but when the food arrived we realised why. I ordered the Lamb Roast dinner.
The food took about 20mins which was pretty good for a busy Sunday. The place was packed but didn't feel busy or loud. Everything was served up very well on piping hot plates and the portions were incredibly generous, expeically the chicken. They definitely didn't skimp out on the meat or the trimmings! We then understood why the Yorkshire Pud was a supplementary option. The Lamb Roast came with a Yorkshire Pud and had some minor trimming tweaks. The Pithivier had a standard set of trimmings, all with a solid amount of gravy. We asked for some table sauces which arrived promptly. Whilst the horseradish sauce looked homemade, it definitely could've had a biut more bite to it. The roasts however, needed no improvement, they were perfect. The veggies were perfectly cooked and seasoned, the roasties had that perfect crust and the meat was soft, juicy and tender.
Overall, the food and service here was expectional and willo definitely be visiting again. Can't really find a better pub in Abingdon! If you're in the area and want a proper pub experience, this is the...
Read moreLocated on the far side of town this venue is well worth staying at if you’re in the area. Our room was on the third floor (two flights of stairs) and was very spacious, smart and well decorated. The venue is adjacent to a major road so you have to accept the traffic noise which starts early in the morning. 8888. The guy who checked us in was very friendly and helpful and our bags had already been taken to the room for us. Breakfast was a self-service buffet located on the 2nd floor with lots of items to choose from but had then to be taken to the room (or outside) to be consumed. If you do go outside remember to take your key to the door at the bottom of the stairs (situated off the courtyard) as it’s self-locking. As we were walking part of the Thames path the venue kindly agreed to take delivery and pass on our bags to the baggage transfer company (so a very big thanks). We also ate at the bar downstairs later that evening and as its name suggests it has a great choice of real ales to choose from. The food was also very good and reasonably priced, portion sizes are also generous. The bar staff were great, very friendly and helpful in explaining the beers and food choices. It seemed very popular with the locals and was very busy whilst we were there which is always...
Read moreI stopped in for a couple of pints of beer on a Thursday night. I have heard that there is good music at the weekend and a lively quiz on a Tuesday but I was pleased for a little peace and quiet. I saw a wide selection of beers on draught but for the life of me couldn't work out what they were from my position at the bar. A good deal of bottle choices in the fridges too but again I couldn't see what was what. I feel there is a great impatience with bar staff who expect a customer to arrive at an unknown pub to immediately know what they want. My feedback would be to appreciate that a customer is seeing what is available and give them time to select something. Subsequently when I left I noticed that some of the beers are listed by the bar but it wasn't obvious to me when I ordered my drinks. There were many populated tables and those eating seemed to enjoy their food. It certainly looked and smelt good from my point of view. Staff were friendly and hooray for collecting glasses and wiping down tables promptly. I shall visit again but please do assist me with a beer menu in clear print. M...
