Visited twice. Poisoned twice.
Update: I am not a bar owner, I'm a stationery wholesaler living at the Pinnacle. Completely baffled where that deduction came from. My review reflects my experience of this pub, and the owners dismissal of it in favour of fabrication speaks for itself I think.
This is not as great a pub as these reviews are suggesting. I went opening night, had a pint and woke up feeling god awful. Having not had nearly enough to drink for a hangover I deduced it must have been bleach or line cleaner still in the pipes.
Months down the line, i thought I'd try again, give them the benefit of the doubt as it was their opening night last time. Same thing again, a couple of pints of insipid, badly kept beer, and once again felt very ill the next day.
The beers they had on would have been great, but they came out flat and lifeless.
The barkeep (who i think was the owner) wasn't particularly friendly either and on our first visit I saw him work out the mark up on some pork scratching very loudly and blatantly, in front of the customer (100%).

There are very few pubs in Wakefield that feel instantly welcoming to a woman in her 30s arriving on her own for the first time, but this is one of them. I went along (on my own) for the Thursday night craft group and was made to feel like part of the family straight away. I've made some brilliant friends and really look forward to the great music, friendly atmosphere, and cozy fire. The Polka Hop has the most interesting and varied selection of non-alcoholic drinks I've seen in any pub, as well as their enviable selection of real and craft ales and ciders, and lots of lovely looking spirits. I can honestly say this is my favourite pub in Wakefield. My husband, who is a committed real ale...
Read moreThe Polka Hop is a real gem of a pub. It's unassuming from the outside, but the interior is charming and inviting. The owners are always friendly and welcoming, and they have a great selection of beers on tap. As an independent pub, they have a unique lineup of kegged beers compared to anywhere else in Wakefield, which includes ABK, Galway Stout, EFES. There's also a decent offering on cask.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly, the beer is excellent, and the service is top-notch. I'm sure you'll have a great time if you visit.
