Bentley's Cafe — Restaurant in Wales

I don’t normally leave reviews but after our bad experience today I was so annoyed I had to say something. So we are fairly regular customers having discovered Bentleys a couple of months ago, and even took some friends who were visiting recently when we all fancied a breakfast. I popped in this afternoon with my husband, and as usual we both tried to order breakfast, with a couple of tweaks. My husband has digestive problems and things like tomatoes and toast trigger that. Also, I dislike sausages, so as usual we intended to swap these things as we have done before with no problem. Indeed we have seen other customers do exactly the same on a number of occasions. Well my husband went to the counter and that’s when things went downhill. Normally the staff are smiley and accommodating, but today he was met by a dark haired young lady who looked like there was a bad smell under her nose and she was somehow doing us a favour. On asking, as usual, to swap these items she looked really annoyed, huffed and puffed, said she couldn’t, but then sort of relented when my husband pushed it. But, horror of horrors, he dared to ask to swap the toast or tomato for an egg! She said we couldn’t, and when he explained he had done this many times before, she stated the egg costs more than the toast or tomato! But here’s the thing, we have always been told the swaps are meat for meat and non meat for non meat. My husband would happily have paid a bit extra but her attitude was so bad we walked out. Look here’s the thing, a business has every right to decide how it sells its products, and if the clear policy was no swapping, then fair enough. But the problem here was this person’s horrible attitude and the we never previously had any problems swapping. Yes this is a first world problem for sure, and it’s only a cooked breakfast after all, but the attitude is what got us, and it is so unnecessary because they have now lost two regular customers. I was thoroughly looking forward to my first visit back to Bentleys after they shut down.

I enjoyed the decor and modern look after the refurb, but unfortunately that was the only thing I enjoyed.

The breakfast items were all of a worse quality than Bentleys of the past, and my mix falafel / halloumi wrap was tasty on the first bite then as soon as any air started cooling it, the taste changed for the worse. The chips were bland and a bit cardboard-y

A can of drink or a small yazoo for £2.50 is really only acceptable when the food quality is not such a poor standard.

I was also disheartened by the staff, the host/waitress gave us a tired smile for a split second to welcome us then seemed very unhappy to be working there, bringing down the atmosphere. Then when a customer she recognised entered, it was all smiles and high energy. So, there is definitely a selective atmosphere created for each customer.

I am going to recommend to all of my friends who used to frequent Bentleys not to bother as it is just nowhere near as good as it used to be, and even if I were to not compare it to its predecessor, it is just a sub-par cafe to me now.

The greatest breakfast in Cardiff - no exaggeration!! While studying in Cardiff I found this place from a Wales Online article naming it the #1 breakfast spot in Cardiff - they weren't lying. I took every family member & friend who visited me to this place to marvel at its greatness. Not just in how the food tastes, but the hospitality of every member of staff is impeccable. They really do make you feel welcome! The Bentleys Breakfast is phenomenal, and such a reasonable price. Their smoothies are amazing too, I'd try a different flavour every time I went in and still would never know which is my favourite!
