Hands down one of the best Indian restaurants in the Cardiff area, if not the best. If you wish to try authentic Kerala food, this is the place to be at! 5 star in every aspects - Customer service, food, the menu, ambience and 100% worth the money. Special thanks to the manager Ram sir for being an amazing host.
Ambience: the decor and ambience of this place is top notch. There’s a main dining area, a small corridor for couples dining and a backyard garden. On summers, they also have got outdoor seating. The lighting and furnishing are vibrant. The South Indian music subtly played in the background adds to the mood.
This restaurant is located in Cowbridge road, right beside the first bus stop if you’re travelling from Cardiff. It’s easily accessible.
Food, drinks, desserts: A huge menu with a wide variety of options to pick from. The quantity is decent and worth the money. The plating is so amazing and aesthetically pleasing. The service is also amazing and gives a good fine dining experience.
My picks: starters - Fish fry, Idly chat, Samosa chat. Mains - Thali (lamb + chicken) Biriyani (Chicken/ Lamb), Dosas Curries - Syrian Beef curry, Alleppey Fish Curry, Saag Wala chicken curry (Green chicken), Daal curry, Paneer Butter Masala drinks/ desserts - Mango Lassi, Gulab Jamun with ice cream, Gajar ka Halwa (Carrot Halwa) The veg options are also probably the best in the town.

Trivia: Mattancherry is one of the most touristy destinations in Kerala, which showcases the vibrant colours of Kerala (also known as the gods of country).
My verdict: #1 recommended spot for Indian food in Cardiff. There’s Mattancherry restaurant in Taunton, Somerset as well, which is also easily on Top of my list. The Taunton outlet might have more variety in their menu if you’re looking for Authentic Kerala options, but the menu here is amazing anyway - with the dishes all being...
Read moreMattancherry is the best Indian restaurant in Canton and a jewel amongst other Indian restaurants in Cardiff. The food is varied and delicious providing an excellent culinary experience of authentic Keralan and southern Indian cuisine. Ram the proprietor is an experienced and skilled professional, who is adept at meeting the needs of customers and ensuring a high quality service. I recently organised a study tour for 16 guests form Catalonia and Ram organised a very successful evening for 25 guests which commenced with a seminar and was followed by a wonderful meal. Ram provided all the required technical equipment, projector, screen Microphones PA etc, at an extremely competitive and reasonable price and ensured that the evening was a great success. Most of the Catalan guest were unfamiliar with Indian food and the chef expertly adjusted the spice mix to suit – so that they all enjoyed the food and the new experience very much. I have eaten regularly at Mattancherry for many years, the food, whilst being top class is also very healthy and a real tonic for body and soul. The chef creates unique combinations of ingredients influenced by an ayurvedic approach that varies with the season. I cannot recommend Mattancherry highly enough, for an impromptu family gathering, a working lunch with colleagues and as a very conducive environment for business meetings. If you like top class authentic Indian food book a table, and, if you are planning an event then my advice is speak to Ram, who will advise and assist you. Diolch yn fawr iawn Ram and team, Moltes gracias...
Read moreMattancherry is a gem for Keralan cuisine in Cardiff. My latest visit was a large table booking for 13 and the service was exemplary! Their focused menu showcases authentic specialities, and every curry I've tried on the menu has been consistently delicious. The service is warm, prompt, and incredibly knowledgeable—they can happily guide newcomers, or can recommend a dish to your tastes and requirements. Considering we had a big table, we didn't have to wait overly long for food to arrive.
My personal favourites; Starter: Samosa Ragada Chaat, Cheese Dosa; Main: Railway Lamb Curry or Fish/Prawn Moilee with Steamed Rice and Porota; Drink: Mango Lassi.
My only improvements would be the beer. In my opinion, Cobra Beer, although on draught here, is not a good beer. I respect that curry houses across the UK supplement their income with their sponsorship, however, I always wish curry houses would join up more with local or independent brewers. Although not local to Cardiff, I can highly recommend the Birmingham based 'Indian Brewery' for some lovely tasting and thematic options. Something like this would add to the charm and dining experience that Mattancherry provides.
Many thanks for another great evening! See you again soon.
P.S. For management. Your online menu PDF is too big in file size (13mb), and takes an overly long time to load for a 2 page document. Feel free to reply here if you would like my assistance on...
