Ely Main Line railway station served the suburb of Ely, Cardiff until the 1960s. The station opened with the opening of the South Wales Railway to serve what was then a growing suburb. In the early 20th Century, over 400,000 tickets were issued each year (due in part to close proximity to the Ely Racecourse), and the station also handled high volumes of freight from the Ely Paper Mills and Creswell's Brewery. After the 1923 grouping of railway companies, the suffix 'Main Line' was added (the Great Western Railway added suffixes to many stations in South Wales at around this time to ease confusion). Despite its earlier popularity, the station's profits slumped in the postwar years. After April 1959, only four trains per day (two in each direction) called at Ely Main Line, and the weekend services were withdrawn. The station closed in 1962 (before the Beeching Axe) when British Railways discontinued passenger services between Cardiff Clarence Road and Pontypridd via St Fagans on economic grounds. At least two different dates for passenger closure have appeared in print: 10 April 1962, and September 1962. Freight closure followed in 1963, and the sidings nearby went out of use in 1964. #elycardiff #Ely

Staff great, but does need work done especially the gents toilets. Other than that, a nice friendly local and drinks reasonable and well looked after. Staff still efficient and great. Drinks well priced especially during happy hour 4pm til 7pm Monday to Thursday. Still the same except the bar staff from Poland have left. Shame, because they were very good at what they did. Will miss them. Getting better, always made welcome and the manager, Lyn, is excellent. Plenty of Saturday entertainment on the way. Looking forward to them. No change except the manager, Lyn, left. New staff on board that are experienced and so still great friendly service. Always have a ball when we go there. Also, they're dog friendly. Happy days. New manager, Claire, She's excellent. Changed the place completely. Staff bubbly with friendly service. Place is oozing new character. Claire's the difference. Plenty of things going on throughout December every weekend. Crack...

The Railway Inn is a very good place to meet up with family and have some drinks. This place is great. During the week days it's quiet sometimes. It could get busy but the seats are always available. They have a pool table which costs 50p per play. They also have Jukebox but it only plays the music on the pool table side. (I think) the jukebox is free sometimes. The bartenders are very nice. The seats are comfy. Outside area for fresh air. The bathrooms are clean and somewhat tidy. They have bathrooms for females and males. Snacks are kind of expensive. I paid £1 for a little peanut packet. The snacks are varied. They accept...
