I first visited on my own, and I ordered the coq burger for takeaway, I was really impressed with the flavours, and service. I was offered a glass of water whilst waiting which was a nice gesture, So I returned the week after with my partner. My partner ordered the coq burger and the Chinese inspired fries, and I tried the wings. I went for the miso glazed ones, and i ordered a side of the kimchi slaw. Unfortunately apart from the coq burger everything else was quite disappointing.
The miso sauce had far too much vinegar in it, it was such a strong smell on the wings and it overshadowed the more delicate profile of the miso paste. (I like vinegar, but this was far too much). The fries themselves were good, crispy on the outside, fluffy in the inside, but the toppings were not fresh. The spring onion was dry around the edges, the coriander was limp too as if it had been left out of the fridge for a while after cutting. When we paid £6!! for these fries the quality was no where near what we’d expect! And lastly, the kimchi slaw was barley edible in my opinion. I couldn’t take more than two bites. Kimchi although fermented, is meant to still retain a crisp and bite, but this was very soggy. The kimchi liquid was also very diluted, there were no strong, punchy flavours as I would expect. I was really excited to have found a new place that everyone seemed to love, but I have to be honest and this second experience was really disappointing for me. I hope the chefs can take this as constructive criticism to refine a few things.
I’d also like to add that the service was fine. We were served by a gentleman, but he didn’t really seem to go beyond just doing his job (ie. Taking the order). He didn’t check in on us during the meal to ask if everything was ok, and didn’t question if there were any problem with the food at the end, despite the kimchi slaw being barley touched. It would have been a nice touch to ask, to perhaps refer back...
Read moreLooks really nice based on reviews, in reality it's a dark dingey basement that sells burgers from the kitchen. What you get for the cost of the meal is ridiculous aswell, for 2 burgers and chips and 1 can of coke (chips don't come with the burger) we paid £45! Utterly ridiculous for a peice of chicken in a bun that was drowning in sauce and had no actual flavour, I can see why this place has "hype" because the burgers are photogenic and make for great pictures but the experience and price for what you get has truly disappointed me. Would not eat here again. They also had the cheek to add tip onto the bill without asking? literally just brought a burger to the table and you're adding tips onto the final amount. (Responding to resteraunt reponse comment below - No, one burger was so drenched in sauce you could barely eat it without it disntergrating into sloppy mess in your basket, the other one was so full of unseasoned slaw it tasted like a cabbage in a bun. Really disappointing. The small amount I enjoyed was quickly erased when I was handed a £45 bill for 2 burger and chips and 1 coke lol. The audacity. Avoid this place you can get much better foods for the price at leamingtons other burger...
Read moreSaw a previous review that mentioned how wet the wings are, I didn't quite understand it, but now that I've eaten here, I get it.
I had wings with the maple and horseradish sauce, and tamarind and caramel. The maple and horseradish was sickly sweet, and I couldn't taste the horseradish, there was so much sauce that the crispy coating on the wings was soggy. The wings themselves are huge, which I'd hope for the price, but don't seem to taste of anything, and they were really wet, - and not in a juicy way. Perhaps they brined the wings before frying but forgot to add enough salt? I enjoyed the tamarind caramel wings more, as there was less sauce which kept the wing coating in tact.
My guest had a chicken burger, which came with a pretzel bun which had no chew to it - tasted as if it came from the bakery at Sainsburys, and wasn't comparable to a pretzel at all.
The smacked spuds were not enjoyable. The cheese sauce was congealed, the addition of cheese and onion crisps was completely unnecessary, and just made everything taste like cheese and onion crisps! I think these were fried but lacked a crisp exterior.
Perhaps they were having an off night when I visited, but I'm not in a...
