My husband and I stayed at these premises for two nights. On the first night our bath plug got stuck and despite bringing it the attention of the staff we were offered no solution. Therefore, one of us had to have a second-hand cold bath. ||||We later discovered there were empty rooms available but we were not offered a room move or the bath facilities of another room. ||||The heating throughout the whole building then failed on the first evening which happened to be the coldest of the night the year so far. As you can imagine there is very little insulation in a 16th century building so we spent the night and morning absolutely frozen. We were not made aware of this by any member of staff and actually assumed the heating had been turned off at night. Had any checks been done on the pub before we were effectively unbeknown to us shut in on our own then perhaps, they would have noticed the issue themselves.||||There was an oil filled radiator in the room but this was not working. In fact, we propped the hairdryer on a table to try and warm the room. ||||Thankfully the bath and heating issues were resolved for the Friday night.||||We were offered a £40 deduction off of a £140 night stay for the first night which we declined after which it was agreed we would just pay £25 breakfast for that first night. We obviously paid full price for the second night.||||At no point did one single Manager apologise throughout our whole stay.||||Even more alarming was the discovery on checking out the pub is unstaffed at night and that we had been the only ones in the building for the first night and just us and two other guests were the only ones in the building on the second night. ||||We completely accept that maintenance issues arise but absolutely no customer care was offered to us at any point and no member of the Management team ever offered an apology||or a free drink in the pub.||||At no point were we informed this would be the case and assumed that somebody was on site should there be a serious issue such as a fire. We were not even physically shown where any of the emergency the exits were. Incidentally the landline emergency number listed in the room information was also no longer in operation.||||We would not have stayed in a premises that was unstaffed at night had we known and when we explained this, we were informed by the tenant Gemma by email that it was our responsibility to check this out before staying at a premises. This is nothing that has ever crossed my mind before and I think that perhaps this information should actually appear on their website so customers can choose if they are happy with the...
Read moreThe Angel at Burford was the highlight of our trip. We had the pleasure of staying with them for two nights, and I was disappointed that I didn’t plan to stay there a bit longer.
The food was spectacular. We had breakfast, lunch and dinner with them – I couldn’t get enough. Their Belgian waffles were so yummy; I liked the little crunches of sugar baked into it (definitely something I’m going to try at home now). The burger, the pie, the naan bread with baba ghonoush, the katsu curry, the fish & chips… seriously, every meal was a knockout. Comfort food, but elevated. We were horribly disappointed that we weren’t able to try their Wednesday Steak Night or Sunday Roast.
We also really appreciated the customer service. Everyone was so pleasant to talk with and they were all quick to help with whatever we needed.
The room was a great size and the little design updates they did hit the mark. It had the right amount of character without being too polished. Admittedly, the shower wasn’t our favorite… it just needs a bit of maintenance for the hot water knob. I will also warn that getting in and out could be a bit difficult for people with mobility issues as it is taller than expected to step in/out of. Another thing is that the room can get quite warm when they have the fireplace downstairs going. You can feel the heat from the chimney through the walls and it will warm up the room a fair bit. Which then leads me to my final thing, we wish it was a bit easier to prop open the windows to let in some cool air (and also if you have a shower, it’s nice to let that moisture out). I know I had some notes there, but they’re minor things. Our overall impression of the room was definitely positive!
This really is the quintessential country pub that I was after. After a day of wandering around the charming footpaths, it’s so nice to come back to this spot with its cozy interior, great bar, and if you’re still wanting to be outside, their large, sunny back patio is equally lovely. We absolutely would...
Read moreNo opinions on anything except the service and the food as we are burford locals so didn't stay the night.
Firstly walked in to an average welcome, 0 warmth, had this experience about 3 months before when we wanted a walk in, but decided to give it another try.. regretfully.
Sat down, no music on. Ordered our food, atmosphere was below average, but it was fine. All the other pubs in burford are full by the way.
rare roast beef was dry and overcooked - If you can't satisfy the Sunday roast menu properly at 5pm don't serve it. Turkey was also very dry. Nothing was seasoned
ordered a half cider, my wife tried it and said this isn't good and put it down I tried it and it was disgusting, it tasted like old socks, completely putrid - I let the waiter know and in earshot I heard the other waitresses commentate (loudly) - "it's cider how can it be off!?" I said excuse me, feel free to try it but I assure you it's not good. She told me she had been serving it all day. There's no problem with the cider and that everyone else had had it just fine. By the way this cider was undrinkable a simple sorry and move on was fine.
I told her either the cider is tainted, or the pipes are dirty, she got even more agitated and continued to dispute me in-front of the pub, at which point I left it. Too embarrassed to continue.
The truth is, this behavior is fine if you are comfortable abusing tourists who pop by , but we live here and have plenty of friends here to talk to about this.
I truly suggest you fix these staffing issues quickly, we have heard from friends in the village about service issues but I certainly didn't expect it to be this...
