On searching for the best Sunday roast in Witney, The Three Horseshoes came out at the top of the search which made me invite friends to enjoy a proper sunday roast.

Unfortunately the Sunday roast was hit and miss.

Lets start with staff, nice and friendly but missing the essence of a true welcoming pub but felt more like a boring job they had to do.

The roast took about 35 mins to come which in a near empty pub is too long especially when the roasts are pre-prepped. We ordered the lamb roast and a burger for variety.

The lamb roast was looking soggy with gravy filling the yorkshire pudding which is a no no as people like it crispy and golden not soggy and over cooked. The veggies weren't seasoned, the cauliflower cheese was a sad addition on the plate where the chef didn't make the effort in oven roasting it baking the cheese on top and adding courgettes to sunday veggies was just wrong. Bitter and just didn't compliment the other veggies.

The lamb was cooked nice, a little tough but tasty. The gravy was pretty bland with little flavour depth.

When i say proper sunday roast i mean it. Where their is a real chef with pride in the kitchen prepping everything with heart and soul, not just a soggy mess.

A proper sunday roast comes with cauliflower cheese on the side that is golden brown and seasoned, a range of seasonal vegetables cooked and seasoned that are not rocks like yours, proper roast potatoes that are not overcooked and hidden under the soggy yorkshire pudding and a well developed gravy that smells yum when the plate hits the table and not forgetting the golden yorkshire pudding that is the star of the sunday roast placed on top, crisp not like a soggy gravy boat.

For someone that loves Sunday roasts, this gets a flat 2 out of 5, and I'm being generous. And im being completely honest and unbiased. My chef friend eating the same sunday roast said more or less the same, it lacked soul.

Recommendation

For a proper sunday roast try elsewhere.

For the GM, quality control and motivating your staff should be a priority.

We had been visiting the area for a wedding and found this amazing place for Sunday lunch. We started as a group of 15 then we needed to add more people to make 20 and they were very accommodating. When we arrived the venue was really busy (a good sign) and had live music. As our party was so large we had been given an area in the garden (which we knew about) but it was very close to the music (which was amazing) but a bit loud for us as a large group so we asked if we could be moved - once again they were really accommodating and found us an area out the front. The service was brilliant - and the food was amazing - everyone loved their roasts and those that didn’t have roast loved their alternatives (I had the fish and chips and it was delicious). Even though we were a large group when the food came out it was done quickly so we all ate at the same time. Same with desserts - which were also lovely. Would definitely recommend and if we’re ever in the area again would...

We've just got back from a very underwhelming experience at the Horseshoes, arrived at 12-30 for a table of 14, we had to asked for them to take our food orders as they were to busy talking by the bar. Food then took over an hour to come out and wasn't very hot, the Pork roast was more fat than meat and was sent back, all our roasts were ordered with Gravy on the side but still came out swimming in gravy. The older blond waitress just said,"that's how they were ordered" to which the young waitress said she had put them through with side gravy. No horseradish sauce for the beef, no apple sauce for the Pork were offered. Desert's and coffee were then ordered and arrived, with some missing, we then had to find our own cutlery as nothing was offered. As soon as we had finished we were asking to leave as the table was booked for 3pm, this would of been fine it they were more prompt at the start. Very underwhelming and possible won't be back...

Fancied a Sunday Roast this pub was literally across the road and seemed lively 😳 so I was looking for a table for 1 and was sat a table in the "corridor" restaurant it was pleasant enough with a view of the marquee. I ordered shoulder of lamb, which came with roast potatoes, courgettes, cauliflower cheese, broccoli, parsnip cabbage, a large Yorkshire pudding, gravy and mint sauce. It was very tasty, hot, and just the right amount. A glass of shiraz just perfect. Thank you very pleasant staff, too, particularly the gentleman who seemed to be the busiest and most attentive

I stopped by The Three Horseshoes near Oxford and had a fantastic time. The atmosphere was exactly what you’d hope for in a classic English pub—warm, welcoming, and authentic. I ordered a pint of Guinness, and it was perfectly served: the right size, great price, with just the right amount of creamy foam on top. That balance really matters, and they nailed it. Overall, a great spot if you want a proper pint and a relaxed pub experience. Definitely one I’d recommend and return to.
