As a frequent visitor to WsM, we have decided that the Duke of Oxford is now our favourite pub and so, our regular :-) Not to say that we wont continue to try out other pubs around the town. There are a few comments on here about difficulties getting food - especially on Sundays. So here is the number one tip....book a table in advance, and the earlier the better. Yes, they do run out of the Sunday Roast - if you haven't booked. I don't know of any decent quality places that you can just walk into and expect a Sunday lunch tbh. Possibly the only exception being a Toby Carvery - who don't let you book - so that one is pot luck anyway. I presume that they cook enough meats for the Sunday bookings to avoid waste. The Sunday lunches are popular. We booked for 12:30 and our meal arrived within 5-10 minutes. Piping hot. A super plate of roasted vegetables - clearly seasonal - including potatoes, celeriac, swede and a side dish of greens and carrots and a delicious piece of pork draft. Not sure why my partners meat was almost twice the size of mine mind! There is an offer on for a desert with a standard 'roast'. I had my desert to take out as I was full. Apart from Sunday Roasts, the evenings and daytime atmospheres are very good with a decent range of beers on draught, in very interesting surroundings. Not the cheapest, but good quality, a nice welcome and customer service as well, all adds to a pleasant...
Read moreOrdered 4 meals, waited over an hour after asking how much longer was told it would be 5 minutes. 3 meals came out and was told the last meal would be another 5 minutes. My salad was covered in parmesan which was not stated on the menu, my mums fish and chips were very over cooked and burnt looking, batter so hard it could not even be cut with a knife. The last meal came out seafood linguine, it had so much chilli which again was not stated on the menu, it was inedible. Complained to the manager who looked dumbfounded and looked at the menu and agreed it did not state chilli or parmesan, said they would refund the salad and the differance between the linguine and the ploughmans my partner then ordered and a free glass of wine he had just ordered. The ploughmans only had 3 very thinly sliced small pieces of cheese and the rest was just pickles basically and a slice of bread. The manager came out with a refund receipt for the salad, I went in to see if they needed my bank card to complete the refund but they said it had been done.??? Now over a week later and no refund back on my card, absolutely nightmare of a lunch and now having to...
Read moreUnfortunately can not give more than 3 stars as we had a few issues, we walked in with our 2 dogs and we had a lovely welcome, then we ordered food and after 50mins of waiting I had to go to the bar to ask how long our meal was going to be as I had just over half hour left on my car park ticket, at this point the lovely lady behind the bar apologised and did offer us complimentary drinks, nearly a hour gone and the food finally arrived but unfortunately it was rushed the menu stated that the steak was on toasted sourdough unfortunately ours was just bread, and the waitress who brought the last meal put it on the table which I said thank you no response at all no you are welcome or enjoy. The food is of good quality and Real chips which is welcome, I'm sure this is not their usual standards but I would just advise if meals are going to take a hour let the customer know and perhaps a bit more training on customer service to a certain member of staff. I would visit again because apart from the sourdough the rest of the...
