Visited for the first time on Friday 29 November 2019 for an early evening drink after seeing the Hogsheads entry in the Good Beer Guide. The beer is very impressive but for a couple of oldies like us the atmosphere was far too difficult to make it an enjoyable experience. The loud , banging background music was overwhelming to prevent any reasonable conversation. We only hope that this was a TGIF letting off steam session at the end end of the work and not the typical noise level of the Hogshead.
LOCATION & STRUCTURE
The Hogshead is located on a corner position on Stafford Street in a large stone faced imposing Victorian building. The building has an open plan layout with a large bar at the rear centre of the main room. A series of smaller areas run off this large main space with two entry doors - one on the corner and a second door further down on Stafford Street. On the left hand side of the bar is a short room section that leads to the toilets and the doors to a rear outdoor patio seating area. The outdoor area has a covered section at the far end with 2 large screen TV's. High tables with stools are positioned the central area of the room with plenty of standing space
BEER AND FOOD
The Hogshead has at least 8 real ale handpulls on the bar with a further six key keg dispensing points on the wall behind the wall. A series wooden display boards on the wall behind the bar give customers a list of the beers and their strengths. A special event for Dark Beers was on at the time and there were interesting dark real and key keg beers available at the time. We had halves of Adams Sloe Storm (4% £3.50 for a pint ) , Sackers Mud City Stout (£4.10) and a key keg Tiny Rebel Peanut Butter Stay Puft Porter ( £5.15 for a pint). The Mud City Stout was very nice but the key keg Tiny Rebel was sadly overpowered by gas which spoilt to usually smooth tasting porter. The food looked good and the various menus on each table showed a good of well priced meals .
ENTERTAINMENT
The Hogshead has a number of Large Screen TV's throughout the site at the time of our visit some of the screens were showing German League Soccer matches whilst others were showing baseball. No sound was being produced by the TVs but the loud piped music throughout the place ( except for the toilets) meant conversation was very difficult.
We would hope to revisit The Hogshead to sample the lovely real ale beers again but would hopefully be able to find a quieter...
Read moreBooked a table for our works Christmas meal. Communication and pre customer service was excellent. Turned up on the night, shown were we would be seated etc. Starters came out, very nice. Then our mains came out.... absolutely terrible! Out of the 11 orders at least 5 of them where freezing cold. The veg felt like it had come straight out of a fridge. Informed staff who took them back to the kitchen to be sorted. They came back out 4 minutes later, still freezing cold and they had run out of steak. The manager was rude, unhelpful and didn't really care. The kitchen wasn't even busy but couldn't cope with 11 covers!? Needless to say, we will not be going back for food any time soon. Avoid!! *Edit. In response to the staff reply below. Non of what I have stated is false. It was a party of 11, fact. Those of us that had steak did not complete our meals, fact. They were all sent back due to the food being cold, fact. When they came back out the veg was still cold, fact. 2 of the steaks where over cooked, fact. You had run out of steak because your staff told us, fact. Just because you do not like bad reviews does not mean they are false reviews. Take on board that your food was not up to scratch and improve upon it instead of denying the facts! That's just bad...
Read moreBooked a table for 4 on Thursday evening at 6.00pm and went to order food. We tried ordering food to be told they hadn't got that particular item, so we chose a different meal and once again, we haven't got that. 3rd time we ordered something they apparently did have and 3 meals came out. We waited for the 4th one, to be told it would be ready shortly after asking when it would arrive. Waited another 15 mins and by that time the other 3 members of the party had eaten their 'child size' portion at £14.00 each so eventually, through exasperation I returned to the bar and cancelled my order that was now over 20 mins later than when my fellow diners had been served as we had ordered all 4 meals at the same time and who had now finished eating. I asked for a refund, which I was given with indifference (still not appeared in my bank account at time of writing) and the staff were very unhelpful and made no attempt to rectify the problem or apologise or basically didn't care. We will not be returning to this place and will advise anyone not to bother if your looking for food. The customer service was at best poor and downright rude, indifferent and they couldn’t...
