Male oriented, sports bar in a city center location. I would class the food acceptable but at times under cooked and presented poorly by the chefs. In comparison to other bars and pubs in town, the variety of drinks and its price points are what let the Royal London down. High price points are very discouraging particularly for the students who they are trying to target to but that could be understood due to the city center location rent .Nights out here have declined significantly in the last two years and is not worth it. Poor Music selection and the lack of space, coupled with high drink prices ( compared to competitors ) is what is driving its core student audience away. However though, the bar has many nights where people are able to engage in social games such as the quiz nights, bingo nights. Its a great location if you wish to watch sports as the bar shows a wide variety of sports and top matches when they are on.
Overall, I would only recommend this bar if you wish to watch a sports match and enjoy a few beers with your group of friends. If you never visited I would recommend you visit at least once to get a taste...
Read moreI've been to Royal many times over the years, I had previously said the food is often hit and miss. More recently it's better and much more diverse. They have an excellent selection of vegetarian and vegan options if that's applicable to you, it generally makes the menu a little more interesting. Usual pub grub as well.
Sports are a heavy focus during the various seasons. It turns into a bit of a club at night.

Good place to grab a drink, or go out at night.
I've found Royal to be hit and miss with food. Sometimes it's exactly what you'd expect from a pub, other times the food is under cooked or just plain bad. However I have had meals I've enjoyed. The tables are often ridiculously sticky too, I expect a little stickiness from a pub, but I don't expect my jacket to peel away from me as I get up.
The service and the staff are good and...
Read morePopped in here on a weekday night before a show at the Grand. We usually have some drinks beforehand in the Spoons round the corner, but found it rammed and a total lack of staff. Then tried the Sunbeam and that was the same, with a giant queue (for a pub?!?!) past the door to be served by just one member of staff...
So decided to pop in here, and what a great choice. We were rushed for time after our adventures to try and have a few beers & little bit to eat pre-show - but staff in here were fab, got us a few beers in and said they'd get our food done as quickly as they could. Not even 20 minutes later our food was out and all 3 meals we had ordered were fab. Made our show with a few minutes to spare.
Thanks so much, next time we're in town to see a show, we will definitely pop in here in preference to the bigger chains...
