Why hadn't people told me about Grump's on my previous three visits to Abilene?? At least now I know!! 😝
Where to start?? Colleagues at Dyess AFB recommended Grump's on this trip, and I am so glad they did..
I rolled in on a Thursday evening and ordered a bacon cheeseburger (minus the mustard, pickles, and onions) with fries and mayo and green chiles on the side..
I also ordered a Modelo in a frosted glass with salt and lime!!
Since I received the Modelo immediately, let me just say that it has been a long time since I've received a frosted glass that was, well, so frosted.. That, in itself, made my liquid refreshment wildly enjoyable.. I finished the first one before the food arrived and ordered another.. YUM!!
The burger and fries arrived just after Modelo # 2 and were received as promised and ordered.. The burger was robust, juicy, and cooked medium well as advertised.. The lettuce, tomato, and bacon were perfectly accompanying toppings.. It seemed basically seasoned (salt & pepper) but didn't need anything more..
The fries were decent, but not necessarily noteworthy.. By the time I dug into them, it seemed as if they weren't delivered to the table fresh from the fryer, and that was compounded by freshly replaced, chilled ketchup on the table.. The latter was a nice touch..
I think I took something away from my experience by combining the tomatoes, lettuce, green chiles, and mayo.. While all of that sounded good while I ordered, I just think I went too far..
That said, I am looking forward to my next visit to Abilene and will certainly give Grump's another go.. The service was outstanding, the burgers have great potential, and the beer was ice cold!! All of that is a winning combination in my book..
The interior space was fun, too.. The Big Boy in the corner invoked all sorts of nostalgic vibes for me personally, as I nearly always visit Frisch's Big Boy restaurants when I visit family in Ohio 2-3 times per year.. Until our next...
Read moreFirst time in and I was greeted right away! I love that they pay attention to us and didn't ignore us like a different review mentioned. So that being said, The parking lot kinda sucks! I went in circles so many times trying to find good parking. It's way too small and they probably should make the lines for parking better. They could utilize the center of the parking for more cars if they painted the lines correctly. Anyways, The burgers were actually pretty good I did have to add some salt to my burger because it wasn't as flavourful as it looked. They are a little small but the pricing is just right for the size of them. I did notice that my top bun was crisp and hot but my bottom one was buttered and Cold! Didn't effect the taste at all though. The ketchup in the bottles taste bad to me. I think I don't like whatever brand they are using. But the jalapeño ketchup is probably the best spicy ketchup I've tried. My son poured it on his burger and fries! I couldn't eat it because it's too spicy for me but the flavor is delicious!
Since it was my first time visiting I went to their website to see the menu. I would suggest listing prices for the menu items. That really makes things harder when trying to find a good restaurant and trying to budget as well.
I have to say I probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here again. The parking is just too ridiculous for me and it seems like it's catered more to college kids or people who drink. Also the burgers were just not memorable enough for me to come back to. I would suggest Gloria's Grill, Blue Sky and Rock N Rollers for good burgers even Red Robin for...
Read moreWhat really ruined this visit was the staff. You walk in and there is a counter. No directions as to where you are supposed to go or do. After waiting for a bit, we finally saw a person step out of the kitchen in which we asked what do we do - stand here or seat ourselves. She told us to go to the register if we wanted food. Umm, okay. We went to the register where we had an awful person. She was like "You gonna order?" Rude. We ordered and before I could mention drinks she replied "you gonna get a drink or go without." She handed a receipt and I asked about seating because even that wasn't offered. After that experience, we sat down. There was a huge empty metal bucket on our table. No idea until later for what that was for. We didn't see anyone until they brought out our food. They dropped it and left. Eventually, we watched a waitress speak to the elderly people next to us and ask if they wanted peanuts. Ah, that is what the empty bucket is for. The food was okay. It was hot but it was nothing to really note about. We listened as the other customers in the room with us mentioned quite loudly about how nasty the margaritas were. "I can't even finish it because it was so bad. Do not order. Waste of money." I can't speak to that because we didn't order anything like that. While we ate, we watched a long line form at the front where we got held up because, yet again, there is not direction on what to do. The line was outside until finally someone appeared from the back to tell them what to do. I don't recommend. The experience wasn't...
