Once a very notable Chinese restaurant, Szechuan is now merely a glimpse of its former self. The quality and appeal of this once rather unique west Abilene eatery has fallen, and I don’t mean a tad. I had noticed Szechuan had taken a drop, even before covid, but this time out, things were a bit more evident. Ordered the Mongolian Beef with wonton soup and a spring roll. The soup was too cold to enjoy, as was the “mushy” spring roll. Appetizers were simply, not edible. The Mongolian beef was decent, but a giant step below what it once was. Not sure if the recipe is even the same, but….. Service, which had been a bit sketchy, even in the glory years, was actually quite good. Everything, though cold, was brought out in a timely manner; and my glass was kept topped off. Overall, I’m not exactly what has happened here: But after too many puzzling attempts, I just can’t recommend Szechuan any longer. The inconsistency is a bit too obvious now: And I just don’t feel the experience is quite the same as in days past. Sorry…

I haven't been here in roughly 8 years. My son really likes spicy food so I told him how much I love the Kung Pao Chicken. He ordered that heat level hot and I ordered Beef and broccoli cause it's a favorite dish of mine. We got our food and it looks amazing but upon trying my beef and broccoli I absolutely hated it. It just did not have the flavor that I'm use to at other restaurants. It tasted rather bland and I didn't want to add salt because I'm pretty sure that was already high. My son didn't really care for his Kung Pao Chicken and the heat level was not hot at all. Well he liked my food and I liked his food so we swapped and were very happy afterwards lol. I'm glad that it worked out in the end . Service was exceptional!

I have only eaten at this restaurant once. I had their lunch combo. I wasn't super impressed, but thought it was decent. I didn't like their egg rolls or spring rolls at all, but the crab rangoons were good. I either don't like egg drop soup or didn't like theirs, but I haven't had it before, so can't be sure. For my main dish I had cashew chicken. It was flavorful and filling, but nothing spectacular. My friend had sweet and sour shrimp and said it was "good, but not great." Kinda how I felt about most of the food I tasted. They had great service, a nice atmosphere and super clean/well-stocked restrooms, though 😀

DISGUSTING!! Do not go to this place. I am not sure why this place is rated so high. Maybe it used to be good back in the day but it has long since became worthy of even being called "decent".

As soon as you walk in, you see pictures upon pictures of awards and successes of this restaurant. This is not the case anymore. We went at lunch today. Immediately were seated. The floors were incredibly sticky. From the entry way to the table was pure stickiness. You could hear everyone's shoes as they walk. When we sat down the elderly lady next to us kept losing her shoes as she was walking because it was that bad. We discussed it. They even stated the place was not worth it. Great way to start our service.

Our waitress was very friendly and helpful. Her services are to be noted that she did quite well for such a nasty place. We had not been here since they opened because it was awful then but thought we would give it a chance. The menu is HUGE. The old saying is "jack of all trades -- master of none." This is the case. When the menu is that large, the food quality goes down. We ordered several things from the lunch menu as to try different things, hoping one would be decent.

The lunch menu comes with a spring roll, soup and rice. I ordered the beef and broccoli for the meal with hot and sour soup. My husband ordered curry chicken with the wonton soup. We ordered the Pu Pu platter and the San Shan soup.

The soups arrived first with the spring rolls. The spring roll was delicious. The hot and soup soup was incredibly viscous. (Not sure if that is normal). The top of the soup was cool and the bottom of it was incredibly hot. It tasted odd and just wasn't very pleasant. The wonton soup tasted like watered down chicken broth. It was bland and luke warm. The Pu Pu plater arrived next. Immediately I reached for the spring roll. I took a bite to IMMEDIATELY spit it out as it was ice cold. I touched the middle of the egg roll to determine it was frozen. Both of the egg rolls were very cold. We immediately alerted our waitress who took them to her manager. The "manager" never came to talk to us or even to smooth things over. The waitress let us know they were firing more now. Both of our appetites were gone by that.

I tried the San Shan soup. The top was cold but the shrimp was hot as heck. I took a bite of the crab and was immediately in pain as there was something incredibly hard in it. Maybe a piece of shell? Not sure but it wasn't good so I wasn't tempting fate again.

Our "meal" arrives. My beef and broccoli looked gross. It was pale in color and was watery. It had a weird smell. I nibbled at the broccoli and was ready to leave. My husband, although ordered curry chicken, really received curry vegetables with a side of chicken. Yes, there was only 10 small pieces of chicken in that giant mess of vegetables. It tasted bland and was just not good. We immediately asked for our check as we didn't want to endure any more of this torture.

Long story short, it was apparent that this restaurant should be demoted for whatever awards were earned. Food is frozen, not fresh. Food is being microwaved, hence inconsistent food temperatures. The floor is either not being mopped or being mopped with dirty water as it should not be that sticky. Even fast food places have cleaner floors and they have grease everywhere! People be warned -- this place is dangerous and people will end up getting very sick from...

I'm a veteran restaurant worker who just moved to Abilene from Houston. Ironically I left a job at a insanely successful local Chinese take out chain (Rice Box). I'll admit that I'm biased when it comes to cuisine especially anything international. With that out of the way, l wouldn't recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for Szechuan style Chinese food.

Don't let the 4 and 5 star reviews pull the wool over your eyes. This restaurant has changed ownership and management at least once since it's opening. They still have the awards and writeups on the wall from when the original owner ran the place. Whomever is running this establishment has either given up or doesn't care about the restaurant or the quality of the food they are serving the people of Abilene TX and is actively deceiving their walk in guests by parading the previous owners accomplishments.

I went in for lunch with my mom today and we both left disappointed. We were seated between two un-bussed tables that had food and garbage on the Tables and floors. We ordered jasmine tea and one of the cups was chipped and had debris on the rim. We started with an order of the Crab Angles(rangoons) They were burnt and tough not crispy ,flakey and airy. The Hot and Sour Soup was egg-drop with something done to the broth. It was warm but lacked anything that makes hot and sour soup other than a peculiar sour note. The spring rolls were watery and scalding. I ordered the embassy beef spicy with fried rice. My mother the shrimp and veggies. The embassy beef tasted like the frozen boxed Chinese food you buy at Walmart. There was no added spice and the beef was slimy not tender. The fried rice was mushy and just wrong. I think they just threw that days white rice in a pan with oil and soy sauce added a sliver of egg and shrugged. I returned my plate and asked for the Szechauan Beef. I got a plate of white rice and bamboo with brown gravy. they were generous enough to add a few pieces of the same unappitizing beef under said bamboo. There was no spice in this dish either.

In conclusion avoid this restaurant. It has all the tell tell signs of a place that needs to close it's doors and let someone who cares about food and hospitality take...

What a shock! Our favorite Chinese restaurant was SCHEZUAN on South 1st in Abilene (BEFORE the FIRE incident!) We have been anticipating their reopening but something didn’t look right from the beginning. Our dinner lady Saturday was disappointing. We ordered the family style dinner (for three.) The food was too salty and didn’t have good taste or look appealing or appetizing. Even the steamed rice was different. I was surprised to see boba teas now available and I ordered a green tea with boba. They served me a black tea instead, although they did offer to correct this. We did not enjoy our meal, simply because the quality” of product preparation and presentation are just not there anymore. The servers are nice, they are wonderful. Aesthetically: the front lawn was not trimmed and properly presentable for a business. Inside, it looks dull & dim. I saw white paper napkins under a couple table legs (to stabilize the table?) To make my experience worse: on my last drink of boba, I nearly choked and gagged when I nearly swallowed a small piece of something stringy and sponge-like with a woven metal thread. Something disgusting that didn’t belong in the bobs tea! I asked to speak to the manager but I don’t think she handled it well. The owner/manager just said it was her fault because she is the one who cooks and rehydrates the boba. (Apparently, the boba comes in bags that have these sealing threads.) The owner/manager said she would discount the tea from our bill!! She said the restaurant was sold to new owners and that the same cooks are there (!?) Also, emphasizing that the chefs were personally trained by the the old Schezuan chef/owner. ?? Greatly...
