I feel bad leaving this review, but hopefully Rios can do better. I had my mom’s 70th Birthday party here. We were a party of 12 and I had high hopes and couldn’t wait to eat so well like one usually does at Peruvian restaurants. As a small child my Peruvian family would go to the original restaurant owned by the father in Chicago. I was looking forward to experiencing the son’s restaurant. Making the reservation was easy and pleasant. When we arrived at Rio’s we were seated in a timely manner. My mom recognized the son, Tony, and she asked how his dad and mom were. My mom was thrilled and she was happy. We ordered several drinks. The pisco sours were good, but the portions seemed very small compared to others seated. My son, niece, brother and mother noticed this during our dinner. We ordered 3 ceviche classico and it was again small portions, missing yucca, no maiz and it was mediocre. The papa rellena and empanadas were decent. We had no problem waiting for our main entrees because Peruvian food takes time to cook, but as we waited we didn’t receive any bread like the other tables, no refills on the water and I noticed our table was messy and no one offered to clear our plates. I had to leave the table to speak with Tony, the owner, to get our servers back on tract. My niece and I ordered seafood, (arroz con marisco and chuppe de camarones) and it was not good. I have eaten more than my fair share of Arroz con Marisco and believe me when I say “THOSE DISHES WERE NOT GOOD”. I did try my son’s steak with pasta and it had great flavors. The lomo saltado was ok, (portions were on the skimpy). My husband and sister-in-law had the Peruvian lasagna and it was so-so, but once again small portions. Everyone else in my family said their dish was ok. Tony, the owner, did slightly discount the bill. I appreciated the little gift given to my mom at the end. My brother and I didn’t want to make my mom uncomfortable on her birthday, but we both felt the food and service was not worth the total bill, ( lo siento). My dad even called me after my mom’s party to tell me how he felt so bad and disappointed that our table was not treated the with service and portions as the other smaller tables. My dad felt we absolutely were treated differently especially as Peruvians. He wanted me to call Tony”s dad to let him know what happened. I just laughed and said I wasn’t going to do that. Peruvians are known for their hospitality and great plentiful cuisine. In my opinion, Rios really did miss the mark and it came at the expense of my mom’s birthday gathering. There are other Peruvian Restaurants that treat all parties the same, have great food, excellent service and I would gladly pay top dollar for that experience. I most likely will not dine here again unless...
Read moreWe went for dinner on my birthday. And what an experience it was!
First, I cannot figure out why their reservation system does not send out an acknowledgement even though the webpage says that an acknowledgement has been sent.
When we arrived, the hostess mentioned that there was live music, and whether we wanted to sit close to the performers. We chose to sit away, since we wanted to have an intimate dinner.
Carlos was our waiter. By the time the cocktails arrived (nice, BTW, I recommend the watermelon picante), the loud volume of the music had started to bother us. We were literally shouting at each other to hear each other across the table.
By the time the appetizers came out, I had started to develop a headache from the loudness of the music. I asked our waiter whether the live music volume could be turned down a little. Big mistake. His body language immediately became hostile, and he walked away in a huff.
I had stepped away from our table for a short time, and my wife told our hostess that it was my birthday, and that she observed that at another table, they brought out the dessert with a candle while the band sang Happy Birthday. She wanted the same at our table, and the hostess said that she would notify our server.
By the time the entrees arrived, I was feeling so bad at the loudness of the noise (it had devolved into noise by this time, Sabine's Law), and just wanted to leave. We had a few bites of the food, and asked our waiter to pack up the rest. Now, any other place would have had the server enquiring whether everything was alright, but our server immediately brought out boxes, placed it at our table. No offer of dessert.
My wife specifically asked for the dessert menu. He grudgingly brought it out, and we ordered dessert. The dessert comes out, sans the candle, or any mention of a birthday. My wife went off the table and tried talking to Carlos, and he said that yes, he had received the note from the hostess, but it was his discretion to do anything or not. He had raised his voice, which is when I became aware that he was arguing with my wife.
I get it, satisfying the larger group ensures that you get the big tips, but this isn't a bar or a dance floor. And I wasn't charged any less for putting up with the headache and a sore throat from shouting over the loud music.
They showed us such a good time that I HAD to share my experience. Maybe next time I will reserve under the name of Speedy Gonzales to be...
Read moreCame to celebrate our anniversary with friends. This little place, from the outside, looks very unassuming. When you get inside, it's a very cozy and modern and inviting place to be. We sat all the way in the back. They have a beautiful bar in the middle. We started off with an appetizer of Alos 3 Ajies, which is a spicy ceviche with lime, pepper, and onions, served with a small sweet potato. This was not my favorite. It was a little too salty for me. I will try another item next time. The spicy, sweet, and sour were different tastes, but the salty overruled it for me. They brought out crispy strips of what looked like pita bread, along with 2 dipping sauces. The main entrees ordered were Bife De Chirizo NY strip steak, Milanesa a LA Privenzan, and 2 Arroz cin Mariscos. The steak was high quality, grass fed beef. Very tender and flavorful. The bread steak was nicely presented, and the fries were extra good. The person eating it said it tasted too much like a chicken parmesan. So, the other flavors mentioned in the description were not coming through. Two of us had the Arroz con Mariscos. There are 6 different fish in this dish. The rice has so much flavor being cooked in seafood broth, brandy, and wine. Excellent! We even had a desert! Flan and a flourless chocolate cake with raspberry sauce, ice cream, and whipped cream. Delicious! The big cherry on top of the night was the entertainment. A lady singer and a man playing the guitar. It just added to the specialness of the night. I would suggest studying the menu before coming, so many things to choose from. There is an upcharge for credit card use, they do offer a discount for cash. We will...
