We were in Akron for Krispy Kreme (that's another review) and wanted to find someplace good for lunch. My daughter used Google to find Akron Family Restaurant, and I'm so glad we went there. I much prefer "mom & pop" places to chain restaurants.
We got there as the lunch crowd was leaving, around 1:30 in the afternoon, and were seated immediately (by Nicholas, who has THE prettiest eyes in all of Ohio, I'm sure!). Yes, it's very much like a diner--the napkins and silverware were already on the table, as were coffee mugs. The menu is also diner-ish, which is to say it's awesome. Breakfast all day, so my daughter got pancakes and eggs, which she rated an 8 on a scale of 1 to 10. I ordered the French dip special, which comes with the coleslaw and fries instead of just chips. The coleslaw was brought out first, like a salad or appetizer, which I found to be different, but okay. I'm not the biggest coleslaw fan in the world, but HOLY COW!!!!! That was THE BEST COLESLAW I have ever had in my life!!! (As we were leaving, I asked if they get it pre-made, but no, they make it there in the restaurant. TRY it...you won't be sorry!) Then the sandwich came. HUGE, lots of meat, and lots of fries (not those skinny little MickeyD's fries, either--these were substantial!). Now, I have never had a French dip sandwich made with Texas toast before, and I have mixed feelings about it. It's called French dip because it's normally made with French bread. The French bread normally soaks up the au jus This sandwich was on Texas toast, which was sooooo buttery and yummy...but it just made the au jus run right off instead of getting soaked up. Still good, just not what I am used to.
The restaurant is clean, nicely decorated, and cheerful. The servers were very pleasant and attentive--we didn't have to ask for refills of our Pepsis, which is awesome--she just kept on filling up our glasses.
The prices are amazing for the amount of food you get. I was kind of hoping to get some pie for dessert, but there was no way!! Maybe next time...and there will definitely be...
Read moreI had a very unpleasant experience at this restaurant today I went and order breakfast food and put half of my food in a to go container and was going to enjoy the other half when I noticed that there was hair in my food, I then brought it to the server attention. She then came back with a manager, who was refusing to replace the whole plate and told me that he was willing to replace the item that the HAIR was closest to. I then stated that I would like all of my food to be replaced because I did not want to eat Food that had someone else’s hair in it. They then gave me a hard time about what they were willing to replace but eventually replace the food To their standards, I ordered a veggie omelette with a pancake on the side when they replaced the food it had no pancake but toast I bought then notified Nick ,and he told me he would have to charge me again for additional side pancake, which I was not willing to pay because they were replacing the food that had to be sent back because of the hair that was in my food but still wanted to charge me full price, which was OK because ( if things were handle correctly and professionally)money was not a problem. It was the principal concerning the matter so he (Nick) the manager or owner whoever he may be was very rude about the situation and did NOT handle it in a professional manner at all ,so as for me, I will not...
Read moreI have eaten here many times in my 30 years of living in the area, and have always been pleased with the service and food. Within a short time, I have noticed the quality of the food, and attitude towards the customers have gone down with some of the staff. If you go through the day and eat there, things are fine, but if you go in the evening and order take out, they do Not want to wait on you, I guess because they want to clean up and get out to go home, however, they do Not appreciate a customer from 5p.m. on, when they close at 6. Also, I ordered a chef salad to go and some of the lettuce was wilted, the tomatoes were green and bad and the egg was gross and I had to throw it out. I tried to order again recently to go and I ordered French toast with bacon and was charged $13.99 when the menu showed $10.49 for it, I guess that the older, slender lady that works there added her own tip, so I did Not give anything more, since she over priced me, like I would Not know and I took a picture with my phone of the price in the menu. The French toast was just plain bread, but was definitely Not French toast and the bacon was Not cooked and mostly fat, so again, I had to throw it out, lesson learned. I tried to call, but got the voice-mall, which was Not set up and could Not take...
