Well, what can I say? I've been coming to La Sierra since I was 5 or 6 years old and I'm 57 now. My family lived and still lives in Laguna pueblo and back in the day coming to Albuquerque was an all day event since it was once a month. After shopping it was a sure thing to stop to eat and there were three choices, Mac's La Sierra, Royal Fork buffet and Tasty-Freez at the next street corner from La Sierra separated by the Hitching Post (where my dad had a couple of beers with Glen Campbell. No lie! ✋) As usual, my grandma always chose La Sierra and and she usually won out. I remember how delicious the original Steak in the Rough tasted, tender meat, the coating, the fries and coleslaw. The dish wasn't complete without the scallion and soft, warm dinner roll and butter. Nowadays, sopapillas come with the Rough dinner although you can still get a dinner roll however it's not warm and soft anymore. Yeah, I'm getting hungry now. The very best most memorable times ever was making a before daybreak trip to Albuquerque (55 M.P.H) with my grandpa to get new tires or an oil change. Once we got into town we'd stop at La Sierra for breakfast and if we were lucky, we'd get to sit in the front of the restaurant at the window overlooking Central Ave. That spot along with sitting at the counter was my favorite place! I learned to eat slow because, sure as shooting, people that my grandpa knew (and he new a lot of people) would come in for breakfast and then the coffee and discussion would flow freely in equal proportions. Meanwhile, I'm busy with my two over easy eggs, hash browns, ham(which was a big deal to me!) and toast. Yeah, the locals still come here, the servers are friendly, fast and efficient ( truth be told, I had a crush on one of them... still do! 🤫 It's hard to choose what to eat from the menu, over the years I've had several items but, it's always gonna be the Original Rough dinner for me! And, of course, over the hustle and bustle and din of the breakfast, lunch and dinner rushes, along with the scent of fresh coffee being poured, I can still hear the old men telling stories and laughing and figuring out how to...
Read moreDo not trust the prices you see online I paid 20 extra dollars than what I expected. I looked at every menu I seen online and when I get there they say "oh that's a 15-year old menu, we don't charge that, it's this price. I'm sorry" And that's it. The enchilada plates not worth $16. One small scoop of beans, one small acoop of rice. More chili than all the food combined as well. The spaghetti is not worth $10 for the kids menu, especially kids. I expected to pay $5.85 for the spaghetti for the kids. And mines the enchilada special plate should have been the most expensive at $12. The guy even tried to say people post whatever they want on the internet, however (these are pictures of their menu on the internet) and these are under their name same looking menu, these are prices that they put on the internet, that they have not changed. It has nothing to do with people posting whatever prices they want, basically saying people post fake prices, it's basically false advertisement and when you get there you're screwed, they don't tell you what you're going to pay on the phone either, they just let you get there and pay it. So be careful! I wouldn't trust what you see on the internet, you're not going to pay what you see. I used to think highly of Macs never again. I could have ordered an enchilada box that cost $40 and feeds 12 people for the price of $50 that I paid for a few spaghetti plates for children and one specialty...
Read moreJust had possibly the most perfect meal of my life here at Mac’s. I’m so happy right now!!Everyone was super friendly & kind, especially the lady who helped me with my takeout order. I got the steak fingers with cheese enchiladas & green chili, which came with beans & rice, lettuce & tomato, and two sopapillas with honey. I wanted an agua fresca, so she recommended that I go around the corner to Paleteria Cuauhtemoc. I had a short wait after I got back from the paleteria and it was more than worth it! I’m on a cross-country roadtrip and I can say that this is without a doubt the best food I’ve had on this trip. Everything was super hot, fresh, delicious & super flavorful. I got really nostalgic because I haven’t had sopapillas since I was a kid growing up in Denver and these more than delivered. Piping hot and fluffy...yum! The only minor change I would make to the meal is I would request extra lettuce & tomatoes next time, since I’m always looking for easy ways to eat more veggies.
I rushed in to the bathroom when I first got there. It was clean & a one person bathroom, which I appreciated.
One day I’ll make it to Hatch NM, but in the meantime I’m really glad I took a brief detour (~+18 min according to Google maps) from 40 East to satisfy my craving for green chili. I would love to come back next time I’m in Albuquerque. Thank you, Mac’s!! Y’all made my day & I’m going to be floating on this amazing experience for...
