(UPDATE) The owner took the time to respond meaningfully to my review and clarified the situation. It's so refreshing to see a genuine owner's response and I'll continue enjoying my bagels here!! Thanks Gregg!
Honestly, Iâm really sad to have to give this review. Chewish deli has bomb bagels. They are probably in my opinion one if my favorite bagels in the area, but that level of quality gets washed away slowly when the organization and management of the shop continues to make terrible decisions when it comes to closing and their hours. First, they have two stores that are right next to eachother, and they have weird schedules that offset eachother. They close at 2 pm, but yet sometimes close earlier randomly. They now have two stores which should mean one is always going to be open but yet somehow again for the 8th time on December 29th 2023 they are both closed and google says they are both opened!!! Long story short, Iâve been going here for over a year, and the owner needs to take the time to either consider expanding his open schedule, or make it better at telling its clients their closing by having their rewards program let us know via notification (or something else, I donât know just a thought). All the disorganized scheduling makes me drive 15 minutes to come enjoy their amazing food only to be disappointed I...
Read moreFinally got to try the talked-about Chewish bagels on a chilly and blustery morning. There will, without a doubt, be a queue on the weekends. It's important to know that online ordering closes on Friday for each weekend. If you want to try their bagels on Saturday or Sunday, you must go in person, wait outside, and place your order. It's confusing for people that have placed online orders, there should be better signage for pickup locations, especially because it looks like they are cutting other patrons in line. Hopefully their ordering flexibility can be expanded in the future.
Now on to the reason why Alexandrians dutifully wait for these filling yeast rolls. The bagels definitely have the appropriate amount of "chew" and soft interior. I've had my fair share of NJ/NY bagels and these definitely stack up well but I wouldn't go as far as to say they are "the best" in the DMV.
There's a notable lack of certain bagel flavors (it's possible that simplicity is better). And we get that avocados are expensive but give the people what they want! Avos should be a staple ingredients in breakfast bagel sandwiches. But the coffee is great!
Some improvements could be made like efficiency of the ordering process and expanding the menu but the Chewish Deli will satisfy you...
Read moreFINALLY!!! Well based on the reviews I'm a little bit late to the party, but I've recently returned to the area.
I grew up in the New York City area and am a pizza and bagel snob. Having been in the Army the last 25 years I've bounced all around the country, and rarely find a better than adequate bagel.
But the other day I went to Misha's for coffee. Sitting in their pastry display was what looked to me a perfect bagel. Of course I ordered it and found it was excellent. In fact it was so good I couldn't stop thinking about it so yesterday my wife and I went to Misha's again and I asked where they got their bagels. They told me they come from Chewish Deli....
So after church today where did I go? The Chewish Deli, and picked up 1/2 dozen bagels.
Fantastic! These are OLD SCHOOL NY style Jewish Bagels.... Crispy hard outer shell, soft fluffy center with just the right chew, and loaded with toppings. Most important, they are not Giant..... They are perfectly sized Bagels the way they should be with a clear distinct hole in the center.
As I just retired and will be living in this area, I can't say...
