Curry On is an OK choice for Indian Food in Ann Arbor, MI.
I stopped by the restaurant after seeing pretty solid reviews, and having heard good things from some friends. Upon arrival, I was pretty concerned that I'd shown up to the wrong location as it seemed pretty dead on the outside, and it was hard to even see the inside of the restaurant. The "open" sign is not easy to see, and probably has turned more than one customer away.
Once we entered the restaurant, we didn't really get much of a better vibe. The place definitely feels like an extension of an Indian store. Very basic decor, simple furniture, etc. Don't get me wrong, this isn't necessarily a bad thing! Simple interior, with excellent food can still make for a great time. The service isn't bad, but there's not much to say for the experience overall. The food is decent, but not the best I've had by a big margin, and not even the best within a mile or two of the restaurant's location. There's a good amount of potential in the menu, hitting most of the usual suspects, but there's room for growth in the quality department. Being in Ann Arbor, I'd expect more from a restaurant that should serve fairly authentic options.
The portions of curry are rather modest, but that's reflected in the prices, so I can't complain too much, but I think I'd rather pay a couple more bucks and get more food. Instead I'm left thinking maybe I should have ordered 3 entrees for 2 people.
Overall I'd say this restaurant has a lot of potential. Some minor adjustments to the interior, getting closer to authentic Indian Food, we could have a winner...
Read moreBeware of the prices they tell you! They misguided me with some happy hour deal. Interesting way of doing business!!
Edit: Here is the full story..
I was not planning to order Kati Roll. But I was informed about some $6 for 2 Kati Rolls happy hour deal :D. This way, they influenced my decision making process. It was misguiding and misleading, as there was no reason of informing me of some deal which is not valid during the time of my purchase. So, the comment from the owner (that can be seen below) that they do not have any record of my order during happy hour is very true and justifies my observation as well. I was misguided with a deal that was unavailable at the time of my purchase! Please ask your seller to communicate the whole story to the customer. Your seller had the option to inform me that you will be charged $12 for 2 Kati Rolls instead of $6 as it is not the happy hour slot, which she did not. I as well did not asked for the bill as I had my trust. I only realized it from my bank transaction history (which is $21.20 for 2 Kati Rolls and 4 samosas :D). So it was indeed a very interesting...
Read moreIt’s ridiculously good food and servings are enormous.
The poutine is such a great idea and their sauces are freaking delicious (if very rich). An order weighs around 2 pounds, so plan on leftovers. Or don’t. They heat over well though, especially if you air fry them. If you get them spicy, get some raita. Actually just get some raita regardless. It’s very fresh tasting and not as salty as you’ll find at most places.
The samosa chaat is worth the extra wait and maybe the best we’ve ever had. The samosa on their own have a bit too much caraway for my liking but mixed into the chickpeas, spices and sauces the balance is perfect. And too much caraway or no, at $2 each the samosa are a steal compared to most places these days. Which is true of all of their prices really.
Yeah they sell out of stuff regularly, keep odd hours based on employee availability, and some of their menu items take a while to make, but seriously. It’s so good. We’ve been to most Indian restaurants in the state and this place wins in value for money hands down, and the deliciousness rivals places that cost three...
