Mae Ornnit Thai Kitchen — Restaurant in Annandale

I was really excited to come here after reading the reviews. I thought I found a gem right next to my house. Was greeted right away, got a table, and water menu in a matter of seconds. I was quite impressed actually. Than the actual server followed up after 7 min or so which felt like a long time I guess because my wife and I had questions. I have been to many Thai restaurants but there menu didn’t have beef papaya salad that we like and she like beef basil which was not on the menu at all. Than when she finally came to the table it felt like she was unconvinced with the questions. I don’t understand they were only 3 other tables there they weren’t slammed or anything. Than I asked can you add beef to the papaya salad she said it was extra $4. I ordered the drunken noodles and my wife ordered the beef fried rice. I got mine “Thai” spicy and she got hers med spicy. Couple min went by and I different lady came by the table in aggressive manner about adding beef to the salad. Saying that it would be extra $8 not $4. Mind you the whole salad cost $11.95 and through the whole menu to add beef is $4, add shrimp is $5, and add seafood is $ 7. So I told her don’t worry about if too much trouble and she walked off with a attitude. When we got our food my wife complained it was to spicy and I saw mine was riddled with chile spice seeds. This seemed deliberately done. I eat “Thai” spicy million times it never like this. It’s like they just dumped had full of chiles out spite. I attached a pic. Our first visit far exceeded our expectations. We will be back, regularly.

First and most unexpectedly for a strip-mall location, the vibe and decoration inside were very warm and enjoyable. So many restaurants in locations like this don't make much of an effort, but Mae Ornitt is different. Mae Ornitt is not just a big bare rectangular space filled with tables ... instead, they've built some booth spaces and dividers to give the space character, and decorated colorfully but tastefully. It was a very pleasant experience to dine in that space.

Second, the service was first-rate. Attentive, pleasant, helpful, and concerned, but not smothering or invasive. The folks working there during our dinner were friendly and checked in on our table just enough to make us feel well taken care of.

Last but certainly not least, the food was delicious. I had the Ka Pow Bomb and a draft Singha beer. The dish was fresh and flavorful, and the draft beer was fresh. The Ka Pow Bomb is stated on the menu to be "SPICY!" and I found it to have enough heat to make this spice lover happy but not so much that it detracted from enjoying the dish. My companion had the Pad Thai and a Blue Moon (bottled) and enjoyed both.

The bill was about $75 including a generous tip (1 appetizer, 2 beers, and 2 entrees). Dining out is never cheap these days but our meal was definitely worth what we paid.

Chose this place as a late Valentine’s Day dinner for my girlfriend and I, and we were extremely happy with our choice. The food, atmosphere, and service were all incredible! We had the chicken curry puffs as our appetizer and Pineapple fried rice and crispy chicken with green curry as our entrees. The curry puffs were soft and very delicious, it was also brought to us in the perfect temperature so we can take a big bite without burning ourselves. They were also the perfect size, we could share all three without spoiling the rest of our meal. My pineapple fried rice was everything I was looking for, and left me extremely satisfied. The chicken and shrimp were very good, but I do wish it had more peanuts, but that is my personal preference. I had no issues finishing my plate, the portion size was perfect for me. My girlfriend got the Crispy chicken with green curry and it was a perfect blend of spice, crispy-ness, and flavor. This entree was a big one, so we packed it as leftovers, which heated up well the next day. The workers were extremely kind and accommodating, making sure our experience was the best. I highly recommend this place as a chill spot to have a great meal! I will definitely visit again to try the rest...
