I have been driving past this place for so many years and never once did I actually consider eating here, but a few days ago, I couldn't help but wonder ... a place here for so long, the food must be good! Pulled out my trusty Yelp and saw the reviews - mainly for the deep fried burrito, but I was more interested in their chili cheese French fries.
I had already bought lunch, but I was really craving fries and while I wanted to resist pulling over to get some fries, another part of me didn't really want to resist. Yea, I gave in to temptation and boy was it delicious!
There's a pretty big parking lot behind the small Taco Treat shack. There are only a few patio chairs and tables outside - the majority of the customers eat the food in their cars or take it home. The lady who took my order seemed nice enough. I had read on another review that if you're a first time customer, they give you a deep fried burrito on the house, but that didn't happen. Oh well - the menu is straightforward: burritos, tostadas, quesadillas, French fries, burgers, chips, chili and drinks. I ordered a small chili cheese fries which came out to a total of $3.82 plus tax. Prices are decent and they do have a special on their burritos on Mondays and Tuesdays. My fries came in a rectangular box, heavy and filled with goodness. My mouth watered just thinking about eating it!
That was the biggest mistake - buying the order of fries on the way to school. I didn't want to hit traffic, so I left right away, but then I realized I would have to wait until I got to school before being able to eat those fries! I snuck in a few bites, but I was able to keep myself from indulging because I knew it was going to be messy. Pulled into a spot and decided to just eat in the car. Second mistake - these fries are good and packed with chili, beans, meat, cheese, and even some fresh tomato chunks. I had the hot sauce on the other side of the container along with ketchup and ... I was glad nobody was next to me watching me eat in the car. I couldn't resist and ended up eating half of the fries (okay, maybe a little more than half) and basically spilling much of it all over my clothes and car. Yep, bad decision ... but worth it! I've had The Hat and Apollo's chili cheese fries and while they all taste good, each place has something distinct about their own food. Taco Treat uses crinkly fries and doesn't take it easy on the sauce or the cheese. The fresh tomatoes also were great. I didn't find the hot sauce to be hot at all, so I just ended up using ketchup.
I ended up justifying to myself that I deserved the fries, and scarfed down the rest of the fries for dinner. Even cold, they were good haha! Do I regret eating them? Just a little, but I'm glad I gave in to my temptations and tried out Taco Treat. Definitely will be back ... in the far future when I want to eat something totally unhealthy and bad for my body. This whole review was based on my experience of their chili cheese fries only ... as you can see, it left quite an...
Read moreAfter years of driving by this little establishment on Live Oak. Curiosity finally struck me. I wanted to know why this little establishment managed to stay afloat, despite all the new hipster trendy eateries that pop up all over Arcadia.
The exterior looks like it could use a little touchup, but in all honesty, that is just part of the allure and charm. Completing the roadside dining look, they have picnic tables off to the side laden with crumbs, sun damage and chipped paint!
Their menu despite their name, is more heavily focused on burritos (that are actually chimichangas), rather than tacos. All the food on the menu is placed in categories that don't quite match, but because it's quite simple it shouldn't cause too much confusion.
Luckily, I visited this lovely establishment on a Monday so I was able to take advantage of their Bean (and cheese) Burrito Special! I also ordered a Meat and Cheese Burrito, and Taquitos to share.
The chimichanga burritos were heavenly! The crispy flour tortilla had the right amount of crisp and in spite of looking like it was dumped in a bucket of boiling oil, it wasn't too oily! The Bean and Cheese burrito was piping hot, and the cheese was still gooey as you bit into it. The taquitos were nice and crispy and came with a small container of guacamole! The Meat and Cheese burrito was not as cheesy but still very good! Filled with delicious taco meat, I would definitely recommend pairing it with some guacamole for an extra yummy meal!
Even though its not the most visually appealing eatery around, the food they serve makes up for it! This little gem is a diamond in the rough! I love the food and I will definitely be back to treat myself to some...
Read moreIt ain't about the atmosphere! I've been eating these since high school when there was one in Monterey Park. I've introduced them to 4 generations across 5 different states from 4 different locations in the San Gabriel Valley. It's the fried bean & cheese burritos with their own sauce, which individually are nothing to brag about but combine them, and they are a multi-generational treasure. I tell people about them and, of course, no one understands. But put them together, and the light goes on. I've had them in Memphis, North Caroline, Virgina, Arizona, Fresno, Alhambra, West Covina, Huntington Beach, La Puente CA and Denton TX and 9 outta 10 people are hooked. I return to California 2-5 times annually to visit family, friends, and beaches, and I buy whatever I have the cash for (usually I plan ahead with at least $100) and bring them to family and close friends, who are anxiously waiting for them. We freeze them, tgttť and reheat them in, as well as med drink size containers of sauce, and I've made fans whenever/wherever they are shared. NOW I take paid orders. I can only support the habit of family!?! I've visited the stands in Monterey Park, West Covina, and Arcadia, where the sole survivors remain. I've seen 3 generations (that I know of) running 4 different stands, and the Arcadia is the last standing that I know of. And I am 67 years young at my waning years, the one who picks up the mantle in herits all. Hehehe, let's see how many...
