I put the full court press on Bangladesh
Formerly Mehfil many moons ago, Little Dhaka is a Bangladeshi/Bengali market & restaurant. The restaurant section is currently undergoing renovations, so "pardon the mess". Looking forward to scratching off another ethnic cuisine to try, I stopped by Little Dhaka for some pre-gym sustenance.
The market has prepared food in chafing trays. The offerings mainly consisted of curry dishes.
2-item combo (masala chai included)-
Rohu kalia- I've read Bangladeshi cuisine is known for their fish dishes, so I knew I had to have the rohu kalia. Reminding me a bit of escabeche, rohu kalia is made with carp. The firm, white fleshed fish is fried & cooked in a simmer sauce. I enjoyed this entree, having some heat to it.
Goat curry- The winner for me. With heat that caused my head to sweat profusely, w/o burning out my palate, the goat curry wasn't overcooked. Being a lean meat, it often is when prepared, incorrectly. The meaty portion had enough fat, the savory sauce heavily spiced & hearty.
Service was fine. I paid for my food, which was quickly spooned onto the styrofoam plates, and I was promptly chowing down. Little Dhaka is located at the Artesia Towne Center, north of Jack in the Box.
While the portions could've been more generous, I did enjoy my quick hot plate at Little Dhaka. For $10+, I had a satisfying meal of Bangladeshi/Bengali fare. The goat curry was the highlight for me, and I just might make Little Dhaka a regular stop for when I have designs for a...
Read moreWhen I was visiting L.A I wanted to see how a Bangladeshi stores And restaurants looks like there. Also needed to get some spices for my desi dish I was gonna cook for my cousin.
The stuff and the owner himself was vey happy to see us, especially when he heard I was visiting from NY he was thrilled! He was extra happy to be able to talk in our own language. Asking which area of the country I am from, how many years I had been living in NYC, etc.
Maybe some people will be annoyed but I love to meet new people, learn about their lives. I believe you can learn a lot of new things from a stranger. And if I get some love from a stranger then I am the lucky one.
We did have some Bangladeshi snacks, found almost everything what I needed. While talking to him I found out that most of the stuff he has in the store comes from NYC, so sometimes he will just run out of stuff until he gets a new batch.
The store needs work, hope the business does much better so the owner can renovate. Hoping to hear about more Bangladeshis to start new business there in Little Dhaka.
There were couple of other stores near by which I wanted to visit but everything was close. It was real sad for me to see that places were going out of business...
Read moreI should have learned my lesson the time I had rice, beef, okra and dal about a month ago. The only thing was edible was rice and dal. Okra Bhaji was salty and beef was hard as rock without any taste. I gave them another chance recently with same items, disappointed once again and won't go back there anymore. I try to support our Bangladeshi restaurants whenever possible, but most of them fail. I never give reviews of any restaurant, but had to do it this time because they should realize that without customers, they have nothing to sell. I hope they take measures and improve quality of food for those who like our...
