What is a one star review? I ponder this as I write few google maps reviews, but feel compelled to do so when I have an unpleasant experience at a restaurant. Maybe to be fair I should review every place, the average ones, and the outstanding ones as well. I have left a few five star reviews.
Anyway, in the case of Mutiny BBQ, I could almost be tempted to leave a polite three star review as the guy working the counter was super enthusiastic and friendly, and the smoked turkey was good, but there was too much holding it back that ultimately ruined the experience.
First, I arrived soon after the opening, and after some thought, ultimately decided on the smoked turkey combo which comes with two sides and some bread and pickles. I did notice though that shortly after ordering a LOT of things were sold out when other people tried to order, right after opening. The second big problem was I had time to notice this because I waited twenty five minutes for my food which struck me as a bit excessive. It looked like a large party had come in first thing upon opening and there were take out orders, but also the guys in the back were moving GLACIER SLOW.
Ok, fine, I'm on stay-cation, I'm chill, the wait is no problem. I pull up some rage scrolling and NY Times to see the world on fire and be informed and wait, and I do eventually get my food. I did not like the sides. Sometimes they say at a BBQ restaurant the sides don't matter, but I think they matter a little bit, and I've had very good sides at BBQ places. These were completely flavorless. The potato salad, MAYBE, had some hope. I caught the slightest glint of mustard and herb flavor, but it was served ice cold so that probably killed off any possible chance of success or flavor. The baked beans similarly had zero flavor beyond that of just kidney beans. I ate it. I like kidney beans, but calling these baked beans is a lie.
The smoked turkey was fine. It was moist and fairly flavorful although maybe could have been a bit more smoky, and sure we're here for the BBQ, but there were too many other failures and the turkey just was not amazing enough to...
Read moreWhen looking for the best BBQ you need to look no further then Mutiny BBQ Company of Asbury Park! Tried to order a complete sample of the menu...unfortunately the ribs and turkey were out of stock...but to be fair the web site warns " we are a pit to plate, fresh food operation and may sell out of the most popular items". But the items I did order did not disappoint. The Brisket...I had chopped because I love the burnt ends...was incredible. Unlike the chopped brisket offered at another BBQ joint (local smoke house) where the meat texture is often mushy and smothered in some sweet so called BBQ sauce...Mutinys brisket stood firm and tender and surprise...you actually can taste the meat. The BBQ sauce that's served on the side is thick, smokey with a nice mixture of spices...it complements the meat taste not smothers it. The pulled pork was equally as good! Also enjoyed the Texas style sausage..AKA "hot gut". A crispy sausage link with a nice spicy kick. All served with the house pickles and pickled onions. A nice touch for sure. Also try the corn bread casserole..sort of a warm bread pudding...corn bread style. The best side hands down is the Mac and Cheese. A creamy mixture of sharp cheddar and gruyere added to perfectly cooked shells topped with Cheez-it crumbles...definitely the best I ever had at a BBQ joint!! The banana pudding had a great taste but was soupy..will try it again...only hope next time...it's pudding not soup. It always seems when you are looking for the best...it can be found in...
Read moreThe food here is excellent. I'm all about bbq but this place is a little different, so the name is fitting. To start, the 'baked beans' were kidney beans in an in-house bbq sauce. I didn't not think they would be good but they surprised me. I was expecting the typical dry chalky flavor of a kidney bean but I was wrong. These beans were cooked in the bbq sauce enough to soak into them. It was really very good. Got sliced Brisket and chopped. The sliced Brisket was made exactly how some of the best bbq places around the country make it like (i visit bbq all over east coast). It's very hard to cook Brisket right but they absolutely nailed it! The chopped Brisket was closer to a pulled Brisket but still excellent. Im used to the burnt end style chopped Brisket but this was still a great contender. Mac and cheese was good as well. I'd say definitely best in the area (definitely way better than that liquid smoked place if you know it). Worth going to for sure Overall it was a more unique bbq place and I would definitely go back if I was in the area. I'd honestly say it's in the top bbq places in nj.. I'm determined to try every bbq place in the state but this one is up there with one of my favorites (mostly smoked rt 9)
Pickles and pickled onions were exactly what you would expect, not sweet like other places. Also the vibe in there was very cool with exception to the...
