I was super excited about this place after reading the reviews and checking out the menu. Maybe it was a bad night but my experience definitely didn't live up to the hype. The lobster roll was really good. I asked the waitress whether she recommended the filet or lamb chop. She told me they are known for the filet mignon so I decided to go for that. I ordered it medium rare. The service at first was really fast and then after we got our food our server waited on the table next to us (a nice couple that came in after my table) and checked in with them about 6 times before ever even coming back to check on my table. The waitress brought me a steak knife, the knife was dirty and had old bits of steak crusted on it. I asked for a new one then cut my steak in half and had one bite. The steak was cooked extremely well done, maybe it sat under a heat lamp for a while or something because it's hard to cook a 4 inch thick filet well done. I also was not a fan of the taste of the peppercorn sauce and in my opinion no good tasting steak should ever be completely smothered like that. The sauce should compliment the steak not completely cover the whole entire plate, including the French fries which goes all soggy. I think the waitress may have known I was unhappy and just didn't want to confront the situation since she was much more attentive to the other guests and even asked them how their food was. She never asked how my food was, she finally came to my table and asked if I was finished after looking at the whole entire steak still on my plate and fries that I picked at. At that point I asked for my check and declined her offer of a to go box since my food was overcooked. Again, sometimes places have bad nights, we are all human but ultimately the lack of concern is what sealed the deal on my displeasure with this restaurant. My girlfriend got the fish and chips and I will note that was very good. They also make...

I have eaten here regularly for a number of years and a review is overdue. This is my "Go To" place in Asheville, solo or with the right company. The atmosphere, service, drink and food all strike a chord that resonates with my tastes Some folks praise restaurants with 'I have never had a bad meal there'. I will go a step further and say, not only that, but with regular frequency the meal is exceptional. The menu is ever changing, and my best advice is to pick whatever intrigues you , ask your server questions, and take risks with something you may have never had before. Some items that are consistently on the menu and very worthwhile: Poutine, Beef Tartar, Raclette, Tartiflette. Items that make less regular appearances on the menu in various must try incarnations are Skate, Dover Sole, Veal (Visions of the elusive Veal T-Bone still dance in my dreams), Pork Chop, Rabbit, and anything with Chanterelles and Morels. Beignets, Scotch Egg, Burger, and Croque Madame are bruch stars. Monday is Burger night, while supplies last. Usually 8 or so cold water, in season Oyster varieties are available; mostly east coast from VA to PEI, occasionally a couple of West Coast options. They are served raw only and are half off for the first hour of dinner. Bar goodies to try: Craft Cocktails (Get the Gordon's Cup or Margarita with chilli liqueur, if available), Absinthe service, select wines, good beer. Dessert regulars 'Turkish Coffee and Doughnuts' and Chartreuse Sorbet should not be missed. I usually finish with double espresso or Cognac. Is it cheap? Nope, but I have never left there feeling I had not received my money's worth...

I made reservations here for my birthday dinner. We got sat on time, the waiter came to the table in a timely manner, and I ordered everything as soon as he arrived and let him know it was my birthday. While he was friendly, everything went downhill from there. I ordered a single appetizer for myself and one entree for me and my husband to share, and it was taking an excessively long time to come.Thirty minutes into dinner, I got my appetizer. Around this time a table behind us got sat. They ordered the same thing as us, and got ALL their food before we got our one entree. They had even finished their food and we still had not received our one entree. I was trying to be patient, but it was my birthday dinner and we had literally been there an hour and a half and still had no food. Clearly either the server forgot to put in our steak, or the kitchen somehow missed our ticket. I expressed my anger to the waiter and he sent the manager up to talk to me. The manager was rude, gave a terrible apology, and did not offer to comp the steak. He said he had no idea what happened to the steak but it will be out asap, after I had already waited an hour and a half. I said let me just pay for my appetizer and leave because clearly this is poor customer service. I reiterated the table being sat after us had already eaten their food while we are sitting here waiting an excessive amount of time. He shrugged and said “I don’t know what happened but yeah it will come asap”. Point being, I will make sure all my colleagues know this place is not it. The service was so terrible it literally ruined my...

The menu changes frequently, which is a good thing. I had the 10 oz onglet, a hanger steak it came with fries there was no option for a side salad. The cheapest salad was $14. And there were no vegetable sides you could have gotten without spending $19 or $20, which I find ridiculous. The steak was not seasoned well to my taste. They maybe threw a little salt and pepper on it or something, but it was really just meat with very little seasoning. I had two pieces of steak. I ate one of them which was okay. It really desperately needed more seasoning or some sauce or something. But of course, if you fancy yourself a fancy restaurant, you don't have sauces. I took the other half of the steak home to my regret. It was really a bad piece of meat and I will include pictures. Also had the oysters on a half shell. They were delicious, small Eastern type. I would be really careful going there. Maybe look at something other than the steaks. The interior was really done nicely. And the bar area was filled with people eating oysters on the half shell. It was a half price night on oysters. I would go back, but I would certainly find a dish that came with a little potato or rice, green bean, something to make a more rounded meal. If you're spending that much money, you might as well have a full meal.

Bull and Beggar is located in a small string of shops in the art district. It has a very cozy and warm vibe. It has an upscale feel to it but would be fine to go dressed up or dressed down some. We did make a reservation ahead of time so I'm honestly not sure what kind of wait you would have, but we went on a Sunday night and it wasn't overly crowded. My husband and I ordered the bread with their charred onion butter and it was warm and melty with a great crisp to the outside. We shared the Cote de Boeuf and it was fantastic! It has the perfect amount of char on the outside and was tender on the inside. The waitress did give us a heads up that it would take a little longer to prepare, and it did, but we didn't feel like we waited an unreasonable amount of time on it. We did not add any sides to it because it does come with an arugula salad with a light citrus dressing, and it is a huge steak as well. It was plenty for us! We still agreed that it may be slightly overpriced, but it was definitely worth trying for a date night.

Another absolutely divine dinner from The Bull and Beggar last night! We spent the day at Shoji Spa and Lodge for our valentines celebration and after a perfect spa day we wanted a fantastic dinner but hadn’t made a reservation. It was 8:30 at this time and many places around town close at 9. We haven’t been back to Bull and Beggar since the storm and I’ve been dying to return so we stopped by to see if they could squeeze us in (they close at 10). Despite being fully booked with reservations they were able to squeeze us in! So grateful! Every single dish was better than the last. 10/10 as always. The star of the show was the beef tar tar. Its perfect. Their oysters are always fresh and clean. The anchovy butter toast was salty and decadent. The raw scallop crudo was beautifully presented, bold, and unique. The baked cabbage with Calabrian chili and truffle butter was a warm delight. The sticky toffee pudding was salty, rich, sweet, and the perfect dessert. Love this place. 🐂🩷
