Let me set the scene: It’s 12am. Just got off work. There’s very slim pickings for food. McDonald’s, maybe Ingles.. but WAIT!! the good ole, always open 24/7, trusty waffle house!
I call the store, mouth already salivating in expectation of that greasy deliciousness. I heard the tell-tale click of someone picking up the landline from the receiver. I’m anxious - Are they going to judge me for my late night I-hate-myself-and-clearly-don’t-value-my-health meal? Alas, I’ll never know.. because the phone was slammed back onto the receiver with same quickness I employed when dialing the number.
That was a failure. Okay. Time for Plan B. I decided to come to the store and order. When I arrived, I noticed a serious lack of vehicles in the lot. There’s only one. That being me, myself, and I. I make my way to the door. Grab the handle. It is locked. The associate mimes the signal reminiscent of throat cutting to indicate they are closed.
I’m confused. My good ole trusty Waffle House has finally let me down. Closed? Can’t believe it! But why? Waffle House is known for their standard of being open when nothing else is. Even in a blizzard. I’m even more vexxed because I don’t understand how this employee is making a meal on the grill for themselves if they are truly closed. Now, granted, I did mention the lack of cars, and this gentleman IS here by himself.
But if it’s truly closed… why is he here at all?
I suspect I’ve been deceived in order for someone to lighten their load. How...
Read moreA long hiker with a service dog newly arrived in Asheville to volunteer in Hurricane clean up, my experience in this horrible restaurant was unprecedented in my experience. Entering, I explained that mine was a service dog and sat down. A manager immediately came over and violated the ADA by asking for paperwork. I politely replied that, while I had it and would show him, the law allows him two questions; Is that a service dog? What service does it provide? I then showed a card with registration that I got from the dog trainer in Nevada. Another guy approached a moment later and told me that they could not allow my backpack in the restaurant and suggested that I leave it outside. I replied that I understood that he'd just stated the unfortunate policy to keep the homeless from frequenting the place but I am a long trail hiker who had just arrived from Michigan to volunteer in Hurricane clean up. He told me that I'd need to put my backpack, not an obstruction as I had it with me in the back corner booth, outside while I had breakfast. I crossed the street where I was welcomed and enjoyed a big $18 McDonald's breakfast with smiles from all of the staff. This Waffle House does not support Hurricane Helen volunteers, is unfriendly to long trail hikers despite proximity to the A.T. and apparently discriminates against our homeless even when they are cash customers. Join me in my boycott of...
Read moreI have never been to Waffle House before I came to this location. I came in for take out and sat at the food ‘bar’ watching the entire exchange between and employees and the lead (and only cook). I was fascinated. The cook was putting out orders, telling employees when he need them to do something to assist him to keep the food line moving. I was impressed and grateful and gave him well deserved compliments to which he was so humble and had an ‘aw, shucks, thank you’ response. I tipped him accordingly and the waitress taking the order (clearly he’s not used to that). His humbleness and also skills is something to be admired - what a sweet man and hard worker. I was and am impressed (I’ve been back a couple of times craving hash browns!). The kitchen area was immaculate and it was obvious he takes pride in his work. Well done, kind, humble, hard working, sir. I wish this kind of service and commitment was more prevalent at every place I encounter and my experience was certainly wildly different from what you see in the news about...
