The first thing you need to know about this place is that the entire restaurant has an amazing waterfront view of the Columbia River. The second thing you need to know is that they are very proud of Astoria having been the shooting location for "The Goonies."
Staff is friendly, seating is first come, first serve, and you order food at the bar. Here's what I thought of each dish:
Flight: nice if you really like dank IPAs, 5 for $11. I really liked the unfiltered lager and amber ales, both of which had nice biscuit-y malt flavors and different bodies.
Oyster shooters: great! I didn't think fresh seafood needed to be hidden under the tomato-flavor of the cocktail sauce.
BBQ pork small tacos: the name is a lie, they are regular street taco-sized. A sweet and hot BBQ pork that had a nice acidic slaw and lime topping. It was an appetizer, but would be my go-to dinner at this place in the future.
Oregon Hazlenut Salad: got it with the berry vinaigrette and crispy chicken. This is a home-run sweet salad: toasted hazelnut halves, Bleu cheese crumbles, dried cranberries--tons of complex sweet and savory flavor. I wish they made it with a heartier green like spring mix rather than romaine lettuce, but that's not a reason not to appreciate the amazing flavor.
Wings: the regular marinade is a salt and chili-pepper-based flavor that is pretty nice. Big wedges of carrots and celery to dip in the ranch and Bleu cheese dressings. The wings are like double the size of Wingstop wings and you get 10-ish of them.
Marrionberry cobbler: oh. My. God. A large ramekin of marrionberry cobbler with a big scoop of ice cream and huge swirl of whipped cream. Warm berries and crisp crust under the cool vanilla ice cream. Unbelievably good dessert (I love marrion berries. If you don't, what's wrong with you? /s).
Overall there's some nice bar food with a great view. We spent a lot together in part because I wanted some seafood, and we didn't know how big the appetizers were. They seemed much bigger than we'd expected in some cases (wings and tacos). We spent over $100 for two people, but when we come back, we'll know what to order and will likely spend around $60 with tip for three shared plates and a beer or two.
For those who care, seating is very fat-friendly. Big wooden tables with metal chairs. The seating area could fit a wheelchair or walking aid. There are steps to get into the front door, so you might call before going to see if they have an...
Read moreGreat views of from tables! Service at tables was less than ideal because there was none. Order your food & drink at bar. Take your drink to your table. I believe someone did bring us our food at the table. After our time at table I met up with family already sitting at the bar to join them. They ordered food & drink easily sitting at the bar. Very nice and attentive guy serving us while there were a few others tripping over each other because they were too busy on their cell phones watching and sharing videos and joking around. Our guy didn't take any part in that behavior. My sister ordered another basket of fries and our guy put the order in and a few minutes later advised he was going on break, but one of the others would bring the order when it was ready. Great, thank you! 10 minutes passed with no order brought to us. My sister got the attention of 1 of the females in the group messing around and asked about the status of our fries. She didn't know, but turned towards a gentleman sitting to my right who was eating his lunch and rolled her eyes and said she would check. We all saw the eye roll and couldn't believe it. (If you're not happy about working go home!) In the meantime we were discussing the possibility of the fries getting spit on or anything else because she was miserable. She brought the fries & immediately was talking with the gentleman next to us in a low voice. Turned out he was one of the managers and just ignored all of this took place in front of him. This manager was done and left the area as our guy came back from break. We asked where there was a manager that we could speak with about the lack of direction, discipline and disrespect of the bar employees with the exception of our guy. He pointed out a female that was standing near or at the "hostess" booth. My party was finished and headed over to speak with manager while I used restroom. My sister said that the managers response was lacking any remorse for how we were treated by the female bartender. Just like she was blowing it off. Maybe this is why this brewery was so dead for a Saturday afternoon! Proper direction should start from the top and be an example to all employees, not just 1 or 2. *Call Bar Rescue &...
Read moreThe only reason this isn't a dead 1/5 is because we came during the Fisher Poets weekend and you were understandably slammed. My partner and I came to Astoria Brewing because the Google listing said it was dog friendly. We had to eat outside, since it was an event weekend, and there were no lights, heat lamps, hell, not even blankets (thank you to the fish and chips shop the following day). While I stayed outside with the dog, my partner went in to grab a menu, scope out the selection, etc. When she came back, she said that the server wasn't interested in helping us, finding reasons why we should go somewhere else, they mentioned how the side entrance was basically barred due to the performance, how we'd have to come in to serve ourselves if we wanted anything, you know, the stuff you don't say as a server. I decided to plow ahead since we were zapped from travel and finding anyplace that would serve us with our pup. I ordered the bleu burger and my partner had the hot chick sandwich, both with fries, and she had a mug of root beer while I had their wheat option (can't remember the name). The root beer was fine, but the wheat tasted like bleach or a bad ipa, and the food was nothing surprising, but either something in the burger or the beer gave me horrendous food poisoning. Less than 24 hours later I was unable to keep even water in my system and was wracked with vomiting and dry heaving that has left my breathing painful even 3 days after. My partner and I split literally everything else that weekend (even water bottles) and she was fine, making the burger and beer the only outliers. Maybe I could have seen an undercooked burger if the outside lights were on, maybe we should have taken the hint when the server didn't want us there. Regardless, it was a bad experience turned awful, and we will be doing a little more work so we can go to Buoy next time, which was our...
