I first ordered from China Wok two years ago. I'm confident it wasn't great then, but I didn't write a review at the time, so I decided to risk it again. A lot can change in two years after all. Alas, I don't think much changed here.
Hephzibah is not known for it's cuisine. Whenever I order takeout in this area I know full well it's a gamble. Now I write these reviews so that a year from now when I've forgotten I'll have a reliable source to go by should I be looking for Chinese food in Hephzibah again.
I'd like to start by addressing some statements from other reviews that I read before ordering:
"I must say this is the best China Wok in Augusta. The food was so delicious"
While not technically in Augusta, if you count Grovetown and Hephzibah, this China Wok is one of two China Wok's in the Augusta area. This China Wok ranks solidly in the top two. It is not #1. Whether or not the food is delicious, is debatable, but I'll concede it's probably heavily dependent on what you order and when.
"The best Chinese food Iāve ever had."
I suppose, if it's the only Chinese food you've ever had.
You get the point. By now you might be thinking it's all doom and gloom from here on out...but you'd be too quick to judgement.
The staff, the young lady at the front, and the family that runs the joint, are polite and friendly.
You can order online, which is big brownie points for me, I always like to order takeout ahead of time, and seeing the menu and my order beats out calling in any day.
As for the food, I always order the basics first when gauging a restaurant. If you can't fry rice properly I probably don't want to know what your take on Mongolian beef looks like. So we started with fried rice, lo mein, egg rolls, and a handful of appetizers that I generally trust a takeout joint to produce reliably.
The fried rice has an odd color too it, almost as if it was fried twice, or I'm imagining things. A bit too much oil, but tasty and certainly edible. 6/10 (It's not bad).
The appetizers were alright. Not great, but edible, and I've seen my share of inedible. The eggrolls - too much skin and not enough filling, but still tasty.
As for the beef lo mein, the noodles were soft, squishy, and slimy. Flavor? Oddly enough...none. It tasted like noodles, not good noodles, but noodles. The beef was the only saving grace, and save it did not, we ate a bite each and tossed the rest.
If I were to order from here again, and I likely won't any time soon, it would be fried rice and eggrolls. The rest of the menu...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI ordered BBQ Ribs(bone in) large, and they gave me three 2 day old ribs with my order. The rest of the ribs were fresh but the three that I am referring to were very dark from being recooked and the meat was old at least 2 days by the hard dry stringiness of the texture. I was thinking of just opening the food and checking it from now on, but I decided that would be unfair to both of us if I did that. It would only show and mean that my trust in them to do a good job has diminished greatly. But I ask you CHINA WOK, if you made a meal for yourself at closing time to take home for dinner, would you reheat old food that should be thrown out just on the basis of quality control? I THINK NOT! I understand that businesses are always trying to cut cost and waste but do you think that there is a limit when it come to food, your food, that you should have pride in preparing and selling? I am a regular customer and they know me by face. It feels like a real betrayal of trust. I will take my business to a different Asian restaurant. There are...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI used to come here all the time in my teens/early 20's when I lived with my mom. Since I have moved I have been craving their shrimp egg rolls. Unfortunately there is no other place like China wok's shrimp egg rolls where I live and I miss them dearly. No matter how many I have tried, nothing is really like it. Since I was over at my mom's, I went in the other day and got 2 shrimp eggrolls and a small shrimp fried rice with the added peas and carrots. It hit the spot and was delcious. With the fried rice cooked just right/not dry and perfectly cooked shrimp and over flowing in the container to the crunchy egg roll with more than 1 piece of shrimp and seasoned cabbage. Their food has never really dissapointed me. The owners are always nice and pleasant when ever you go in and they are doing such a good job! I wish there was a China wok where I lived š„° so if you are ever there, get their shrimp egg rolls and try...
