I've had several meals at Tofu Story, and each time I go, the service is usually excellent. But we went on Mother’s Day lunch was a very different and unsatisfactory experience. A unpleasant young female waiter abruptly told us to wait 40 minutes after we had started waiting in line, even though it was apparent that numerous customers had already finished and were paying, so it wasn't a major concern. The primary problem is the poor service I got from the server. Not only was one of the dishes awful and did not seem like the photo that was presented, but she was also really unfriendly.I ordered Mopu Tofu, which is supposed to come with ground pork according to the menu. However, when the dish arrived, it only had tofu and sauce; I was unable to taste or see any ground pork in it. I questioned the young female server whether the dish had any kind of mala or numbing spice because I don't like these kinds of spices and they numbed my tongue when I ate them. She stated that she didn't know what kind of spice was in the mopu tofu dish and asked if I didn't like it. When I said that I didn't, she just laughed and said "ok" and left. Her response was so odd and dismissive. Not that I was expecting anything, but for twenty-four dollars, the tofu ought to have some pork ground like the menu has stated instead of simply tofu and sauce. More importantly, I would not have purchased it if the menu had mentioned that it contained some sort of numbing spice. I packed it up and perhaps someone else could like what I wasted $23.90 on. The server is lucky to receive any gratuity, and since it's a Sunday and I feel bad since I know people that also work in the service industry, I gave a standard American tipping . Definitely not going to visit or place an order from Tofu Story...
Read moreMy honest review as a Korean American. This is no frills soft tofu restaurant. It won't blow you away but decent. I believe since their name is Tofu Story then that should be their specialty; tofu, so I ordered their combination (seafood and beef) SoonDobu and an intestine SoonDoBu. (SoonDoBu is soft tofu). They did have a lot more than just tofu but figured I could always come back another time if I like their tofu dishes. The good: excellent soft tofu Various Bahn Chan (side dishes) was good and tasty individual sized pressure cooked rice. Cooked perfectly. intestines were prepared and cooked nicely inside layout and design is nice, and the ability to see tofu made fresh was interesting
Needs work: customer service. They need to work on acknowledging customers when arrive. We stood at the door and 2 wait staff just looked at us without a word. A simple Hello or one moment please would go a long way. We weren't the only ones, as I saw other customers just stand at the door waiting to be seated, and again wait staff not acknowledging or saying anything to them. SoonDoBu was bland. I'm sorry but this was not what I expected from a tofu specialty restaurant. I expected more flavor.
Overall, this restaurant is worth a try but do expect the menu items to be on the pricier side. For me, the SoonDoBu was okay but too pricey for 2nd best...
Read moreI saw a TikTok raving about Tofu Story so I decided to give it a try. We could tell it was busy when we got there, but there were two empty tables. One of the servers was talking with a table by the entrance and continued to have a casual conversation with them while we waited for 5 minutes to be seated by another server. We ordered the pan-fried dumplings, braised short ribs, and a small portion of the soy sauce marinated crab. As a Korean, the dishes were very mediocre for the high price. I understand they they’re known for their soon tofu, so maybe that would’ve changed our experience - we weren’t in a stew mood. This could also just be me, but the kimchi and the cucumber kimchi had a weird taste to them. We ordered a bottle of soju and when the server brought out two shot glasses, we noticed that one glass had a huge crack down the middle. Not only that, but both of our water cups had a piece of hair in them - luckily we noticed it before we drank the water. We couldn’t finish the braised short ribs so we took it home. When we ate it the following day, we noticed there were TWO more hairs (similar to the ones in our water cups) when we basically finished the plate - who knows if there were more that we ate. For everything, the total was about $115 (not including tip). This was our first and definitely...
