Underground Cocktail Lounge In Austin
MichMich
TLDR: Weird service, decent food, great cocktails. I went when DMC first opened but decided I needed a refresh on this "moody" basement lounge. We had reservations for a party of four at 6:30 on a Saturday and it didn't seem too busy. The service is awful. The girls were like robots and it felt very unwelcoming. Our waitress forgot our drinks and the timing of our food was odd. Even when one of the other waitresses dropped off some of our drinks she seemed out of it or something, really weird. Onto the food. We started with the East Coast oysters. It's listed to have acqua pazza, chili oil, and chives but something about it was very vinegary and over powering. Meh. Then we got the whipped ricotta and goat cheese. The pita that this comes with is divine, everyone loved this dish. We also got the patatas bravas which were fine, could have used more crispiness. We split the lamb shank and pork chop for our mains. The meat in both dishes were amazing, tender and well seasoned. The plating makes it seem like the dishes were massive when they really weren't, it was mostly sides spread out. Since these are intended to be shared, it would've been nice if there was some creativity with the sides and they weren't all the same.

5 stars all around. From the moment you walk in, you're completely taken out of Austin and placed into an atmospheric abyss of art, seduction, worldly culture. The hostess was kind and inviting and got us seated quickly even though she clearly had to make room (next time we'll make a reservation if coming in for dinner). We were a group of 5 ladies and came in on a Thursday around 7pm for cocktails + small bites, as we had other dinner plans. After getting a warm and in-depth explanation of the menu from our waitress, we ended up cancelling our dinner plans and staying for a full course. I'm glad we did!

We all started with the Hellfire, which was described as their signature cocktail. It definitely has a kick to it but is still really well-balanced in sweetness and citrus from the blood orange. I'm a tequila gal and this satisfied me. Girlfriends also got the Rose Fizz and De Espana. Rose fizz was light a delish; De Espana came out on a beautiful display that made the 'gram.

For food, our waitress recommended the Halloumi Brulee, Brussel Sprouts, and Pita/Hummus to start. 10/10 on everything from taste, to presentation. We ended up getting The Devil's Eggs too, and the table order 2 more rounds of it. Great creative version of a traditional deviled egg. All of these plates were smaller portioned and perfect for sharing with the table. We were a little unfamiliar with some of the terms on the menu, but staff was absolutely amazing and walked us through the whole thing as needed. Even had a little glossary section in the menu itself to explain some terms. This made it a whole experience, and you truly feel like you're not in Austin anymore.

We moved on to entrees and got one of each of their large plates. We put the order in with our first dishes, as the waitress let us know they were all made-to-order. We never had a shortage of food on the table regardless. Lamb shank was my fav- it felt like an entire leg of lamb and the server even peeled in right off the bone for us at the table!

As we were ordering our last round, a DJ came in and the place began to transform. Lights got dimmer, groups started to shuffle in to enjoy bottles of liquor and champagne, and the vibe went into more of a sophisticated, upscale lounge party. Coolest part- the food menu stayed available throughout!

We walked in thinking this was just a cocktail lounge and was surprised to see this place is successfully offering every kind of experience- happy hour, cocktails, dinner, AND late night Thurs-Sun! I'll be back to try dessert (didn't have enough room at that point lol), and we've already inquired about booking a table for bottle service for a birthday...

Came in twice to celebrate and got to pop in during R&B night. The place is gorgeously done with sexy, dim lighting, and lots of cushy seating. We enjoyed the Spicy Hummus and a few skewers which were tender and flavorful. Our friends got the chicken which came with crispy potatoes and warm naan bread. Wanted to try the oysters, but they were fresh out, so we will save for next time. However, food definitely did not disappoint!

For drinks we were recommended the Clear Paradises and the Coconut Mojitos. If you like sweet drinks that aren't sickly, these are pretty good. Espresso martinis were tasty and half off on Thursday.

Service was fast and attentive, Tyler was very patient and sweet with our loud group. Went out of her way to make sure we had Instagram-worthy pictures that we all liked and checked on us with each plate they brought out. Mention your celebration and they will bring you an adorable shot on fire! I didn't catch the second waitress' name, but she was nice as well. Stick with your server's recommendations to make sense of the busy menu and you're set. The service here is definitely one of the best parts of this place from the lobby to the table.

Cons and places for improvement- The club portion could be improved. We planned to stay and buy a table , but when we asked about add-ons, they came up blank. Pricy bottles for no reason, so if you're planning to come out to have a club night and really celebrate; know that there are no signs, bubbles, anything fun-just 30 seconds of awkward flashing lights to be honest. We asked to put our friend's name on the typical club signs you can get anywhere else, but they didn't have one in the entire building. Disappointed as we wanted to make a night out of it and keep drinking with good music, recommended table by a friend but the energy in there was low after 11 PM. Very different than what your money gets you on the rest of the strip. Great potential for the perfect one-night stop in Austin, but not quite there for the second part of the night.

Bathroom had a very interesting smell both nights, but was clean at least. The upstairs balcony would be nice if you want a...

I came to this establishment on a Friday evening. After ordering the first round of drinks, the server kept pitching the bottle service and offered to comp the drinks we’d already had. She quoted us a price that we felt was reasonable. Before I confirmed the bottle service order, I asked the server if I could pay for our tab through inkind. She confirmed that I could. We went ahead and ordered the bottle, after which the server informed me that she had already run my friend’s credit card for the first round of drinks that we ordered and that we wouldn’t get the first round for free. While annoyed with the situation, we went ahead with the bottle order. At the end of the night, we asked for the check and the server came back with the check that had already been run on the credit card used to hold the table. It was also a higher price than what we were quoted for the bottle. We reminded her that we wanted to use the inKind app to pay and reminded her of the amount that she had quoted us and she said that she would get her manager to fix the issue. The manger came over and told me it was his discretion on whether or not we could use inkind and said devil may care does not allow bottle service to be paid through inkind. He also said that it was our responsibility to check the menu price, even though his server acknowledged that she quoted us the different price verbally. I strongly would not recommend this establishment due to shady business practices, which is unfortunate because my friends and I had visited multiple times previously. I’d keep this business of my go to lists for the future, along with the rest of the properties that this...
