We did a Haunted ATX tour the night before our stay which amped up the excitement about the stay, although I will say there is a big discrepancy on the stories told by the HATX guide and the Driskill Tour Guide. I dont know if one was dumbed down for the regular guests to not scare anyone or if the other was amped up and embellished to add to the "hauntedness" of the tour. Do you beleive the guide who has been doing tours for 12 years or the employee who has been there for 9 months? I guess we will never know.
Booking/checking in was a bit of a mixup because we booked through Hyatt customer service (Hyatt owns the driskill) which physically had to call the location to confirm availability of the specific room (525) we wished to stay in due to its "heightened paranormal activity". Upon checkin they initially told us that the room we requested was unavailable. However, after explaining that we specifically called to book vs booking through a site like expedia so that we could get guaranteed room placement, accomodations were made to get us into the room. Not really sure why they would tell us the room wasnt available when in fact it was. The only reason im not taking off stars for that mixup is because they were actually able to get us into that room.
In the meantime, Hyatt Customer Service, please be sure to notate these things to the actual property where your customers wish to stay as this nearly resulted in a cancellation and a big fiasco.
The hotel itself is very well maintained. A ton of history, a ton of originality and the room we stayed in was well maintained. The elevator is old and slow on the historic side, but it got us where we needed to be and only once gave us a scare that it wouldnt open. But once we realized it happened every time, we learned that its just the way it operates. Its a bit slower than modern ones.
Unfortunately, we did not experience "anything significant" as we were hoping for, but maybe sometimes thats for the best. My girlfriend did say that after me and my kid fell asleep, she heard the zippers of the suitcase clinging around bit tried to ignore it.
Great water pressure in the bathroom too! My kid said it filled the tub in about 2 minutes!
Only reason for giving the room a 4 star is that there havent been many updates for modern conveniences such as conveniently located usb chargers. The built in ones in the lamps didnt work. The air wasnt super cold, but what hotel actually is. The sink in the bathroom was unnaturally small and besides the top of the toilet tank, there was no shelf to set your toothbrush/paste/personal hygeine items. A small inconvenience for the otherwise nice setup of the room.
Would definitely stay here again.
Valet parking is the only option...
Read moreI am a local native austinite and took a haunted tour with my daughter and her friend who are 13. At the end of the tour nothing was said about us not being able to walk around the hotel. The two children and myself (a woman) were cornered in a hall way by a man with a long beard. He was demanding that we leave and that we had a “professional” camera that we could not bring into the hotel. When it was a 10 year old camera my daughter carried with her the entire tour into multiple locations and took photos the entire time inside the driskill while on the tour and he watched. He demanded that we go down the elevator with him which I then told him that me and the girls are not comfortable being on an elevator alone with him. He then threatens to call the police and explain that I would be happy to have the police escort us and that we would all feel more safe. I then ask for a female to escort us down the elevator and he refuses then threatens to call the police again. He then makes a frivolous call where he then hung up on whom ever he called immediately. I asked if we could take the stairs and he take the the elevator and he demands to follow us down the stairs. I then tell him we will not do that and that he either needs to send a female to escort us or call the police and that we would like to leave. The only way he allowed us to leave was if he practically pushed us into the elevator and pressed the buttons for us. Extremely scary for the underage girls and myself, this man was intimidating, controlling and borderline vulgar. I felt targeted because I had the young girls with me. Please beware bringing children here. I’m almost convinced that we avoided being assaulted or worse. I begged this man to call the police or for a female to help us feel safe and that we are scared to be stuck in a elevator or stair well with him and he would not do EITHER. told me there is no women working when there is a lady right at the front desk and he would refuse to call the police after making such threats. Such a terrifying experience. I have stayed at the driskill and I have also walked around to the bar many time along with walking around the entire hotel, NEVER have I been...
Read moreI was very disappointed at my recent stay at The Driskill. For context, I am a seasoned luxury traveler, and research properties far in advance to make sure I’m getting my money’s worth.
I booked this hotel through my credit card’s Luxury Collection service for $800+tax/night for a standard King room. That is a steep price to begin with, but for that price I expect perfection. This hotel does not deliver anywhere near that.
First, check in was 4pm but when I arrived at 1pm I was told the room was being cleaned. I waited till 3:20pm and was finally given a room. I was waiting patiently thinking it wouldn’t take that long to clean. Rather than say come back at 4pm, I was given the impression that a room was ready and waiting to be cleaned. It’s not the thought of waiting that bothered me, rather the expectation that something was being offered and not delivered.
Second, the rooms/hotel are not worth the price. I have paid far less at world class resorts such as Aman, Taj, Oberoi, Four Seasons and the expectation at that price point is pure luxury. The rooms are dated, the mattress did not even fit the bed frame (posing an actual hazard to guests), no bath tub, and sparse somewhat random furnishing. Nothing is high end. Amenities are completely lacking, no slippers, no turndown service. There is no pool. Again, for $800/night I expect luxury.
Third, breakfast was included in my rate but beware - breakfast at the 1886 cafe is not what you’d expect at a luxury property. You stand in line to order and seat yourself, there is NO table service, yet gratuity is included automatically. This again is NOT what you’d expect for a luxury hotel.
Fourth, service was terrible. I had to complain multiple times to finally get heard, but to the hotel’s credit I was ultimately refunded 30% of the rate.
Overall, I feel robbed. I love travel, and when I researched this hotel I was extremely excited. The photos portray a beautiful, old charm hotel in the heart of Austin. The rooms appear grand, breakfast looked special. But I was gravely...
