Visited here purely off the recommendations and reviews…. I am confused about what people are rating. It was not an horrific experience but it was not anywhere close to 4 stars. There was quite the crowd inside and out so expectations were high. Upon entering the building I was quickly politely greeted so we were off to a good start(1star earned). I actually came in with an injured ankle and was seated nearby and away from a bunchof traffic so I think they may have taken that into consideration or it may be a coincidence but I’m going to give them the credit. So rough day with the ankle and hospitals and all so I needed a nice drink. At a glance my guess and myself could not locate anything super appealing to our preferred taste of sweet and strong so we took the waiters recommendation. The drink that was brought out was disappointing and devoid of any sweetness. I sent it back and they were able to add orange juice or something to accompany the flavor and returned the drink “tolerable”. I ordered shrimp enchiladas (yes, that’s my go to dish). They had several options and I advised the waiter I would like a white cream option. Now remind you it was not horrible but Au was confused about what was brought out to the table as it as enchiladas with a green paste and cheese melted on top. The taste was not awful but I found it hard to maneuver around the globs of green tasteless paste. At some point I was ready to try another drink but when I looked around the waiter was at the bar eating his own full meal. The icing on the cake … the drinks were itty bitty and full of ice so it’s not much liquid in the glasses. My guest ordered a frozen and it was served in a shot glass 😹. The waiter was attentive at the beginning and. Kept our glasses full of water at first. He also advised us of all the salsa options even though the hostess only gave us 3 (without asking our preference). Finally, I like an old rustic style restaurant but it just felt dirty to me with little to no care what was being hung on the walls and no attention to how they were hung. I give 1 more...
Read moreCame in on 6/29/2025 about 7:15 pm after a movie at The Paramount, we were sat in a booth that is an obvious add on booth at some point, I sat down and my rear went all the way to the bottom and I could feel the wood from below, so I switched sides as it was VERY uncomfortable.
We waited a little bit for our server, sever comes over and has the personality of a wet blanket, no greeting, no how are you, nothing, she walks up and simply says, "what are you having to drink" comes back with our drink, then, "are you ready to order" brings the food, which was "decent" the server wasn't rude, wasn't mean, but you could tell that working was the LAST thing she wanted to be doing.
We pay the tab and on the way out I see a sever (said his name was Will) and asked if he was a manager as he was dressed slightly different, he tells me he's not a manager, but asks what's up. I proceed to explain how AWFUL that the "add on booth" was and how I went straight to the floor when I sat down, his reply was, "I don't know what to tell you dude" REALLY, you couldn't have just said, I'll get you a manager when I asked if you were a manager???
I ask to talk to a manager, a manager comes over and I explain the booth to him, he looks at me and says, "well you're welcome to sit at any available table when you come in" not, "I'm sorry about that" not, "we will look into it" just kind of a smart ass reply.
I have going to this Guero's since they opened, but will probably NEVER return, I felt about as unwelcome on my visit as I have at any restaurant/bar since I can remember. This place has gone DOWNHILL over the years and their staff is example A of how much it's gone downhill, sorry, but there are better, cheaper options all over Austin, that you will probably get treated MUCH...
Read moreWe are visiting from out of town and wanted some authentic TexMex food. We were on South Congress and tried Guero’s. We were very disappointed. We started with the chips and queso. The queso was okay but tasted like they had warmed up a block of Velveeta cheese and put a little pico de gallo in it. It wasn’t spicy and just tasted like Velveeta. I ordered a margarita on the rocks. It arrived frozen so the server had them re-make it. The frozen one was okay but didn’t have a great flavor. The one on the rocks was terrible. It had no flavor at all- just tasted like water with a little lime or something. I couldn’t even drink it. When I complained to our server, she said that the ones on the rocks are never good and she doesn’t recommend them. She agreed that they have no flavor. She didn’t tell me that BEFORE I ordered, however, and she didn’t take it off my bill.
My kids ordered nonalcoholic flavored margaritas- one raspberry and one strawberry and they also said theirs were tasteless. We’re basically paid $7 each for colored water.
The good was mediocre and lacked flavor. I had a fish taco, pastor taco, and a beef and pork tamale. The fish taco had some flavor but the fish was mushy. The pastor taco had pineapple and that was the only part with any flavor. The tamale was rather dry and didn’t have much flavor either. The kids had a steak taco and brisket tacos and they said they were okay. The tacos were just meat on a flour tortilla, though. There were no toppings.
The atmosphere was nothing exciting. It was kind of loud despite not being crowded.
I would not recommend this restaurant. We were very disappointed with the...
