Before I dive into my review. You must know I am from Albuquerque. We dot have many barbecue places out there.
I'm visiting Austin for work. While on my out, I Googled best barbecue places in Austin, and this place popped up on multiple occasions, so I decided to give it a try. I went to the original location near Cosmic Coffee to find a sign on their old food truck directing customers to their new location. Slightly frustrated (Google said this place was open at this location). I drove a short 8-minutes to their new location. Parking was easily accessible but I was lucky to find a spot. This place was packed at 1140am. The entrance is located in the back. Very welcoming modern/urban looking building. The aroma of smoked wood surrounds the entrance near the massive walk-in rustic looking smoker near the parking lot.
When I entered the restaurant, there were about 30-40 people ahead of me. I was immediately greeted by a very nice employee. They handed me two menus and explained where the ordering process and how it works. I was a little intimidated by the menu, but the employees' help came in clutch. Depending on what you are eating, there are 2 separate areas to order from, the bar or the main check out area. The bar was taking more of the burger orders versus the main line where you ordered their signature barbecue. They give you a paper menu to read through before the main menu becomes visible the closer you get to ordering. While waiting in line, the staff makes you feel very comfortable. They break down the menu and simplify it. Chick fil A can take notes from these guys on customer service. Even the owners came out and were chatting with the patrons.
It took about 13 minutes to reach the front. The ordering process is broken down into stations. Depending on what you want to eat will determine the station you order from. I ordered a sliced beef sandwich with pork hash and rice. Again, the staff making my food were incredibly friendly. EVERYONE at this place makes you feel at home.
When my food was prepared, I checked out at the cashier. This place was already packed. Ironically, I found a seat near the owners (husband and wife, I think). I accidentally (Voulntarly) ease dropped on their conversations with customers. I can vaidate their online reputation of being friendly. Every customer was greeted and helped with the plates when they were finished. It's usually rare to see the owners interact with customers, let alone help bus tables
Now, the food. Delicious. Let's start with the pork hash. The rice was perfectly cooked. The pork hash gravy was delicious. The shallots on top made it even better. I inhaled the whole damn thing.
The sandwich was even better. The buns were grilled to warmth and compliments the rest of the sandwich. The cut of the meat was tender. Flavors were perfect. Was that thyime I tasted? I dont know. But it was delicious as hell! The Kimchi was an experience as well. I would compare it to a cold beer after a long day at work. It hit the spot. Their sauce was.... yes. Good as hell! My review of their food is simple... excellent.
I will be back again soon. Maybe desert and a beer. You have a new fan L&L BBQ. Me.
I will publish a formal review on my site following...
Read moreSo good! Finally got a bacon rib. If you don't know what a bacon rib is then lend me your ear! It's a spare rib with the pork belly still attached that is then cured like bacon, then smoked, like bacon and then glazed sweet for a juxtaposition of savory, rich, unctuous, fatty dessert like goodness that sings on your tongue. It was okay, I guess. I also finally got me the infamous L&L burger. If you don't know what a burger is then I'm not sure you should read any further. Smoky, peppery, perfect salt, cheesey, and somehow the pickles (house made? I'd bet on it) cut through and make this burger something special! Special-er? Yep! Special-er! The all beef sausage was another stand out amongst many. Perfect texture and seasoned so well. Right to the edge of salty. Juicy, snappy and smoked perfection! The flat iron was very good, crusty foil boat bark, well rendered, tender and smoky. We had two sides that are no joke. Pork hash on white rice that should come with a by the bowl option and the choripapas that would be amazing with white rice as it is very rich. Heck, a nice lime wedge or two would cut some of that richness. For dessert an unexpected and delightfully delicious cheddar cheese cake with a topping of what I'm assuming was house made apple sauce, but I may be wrong. Either way, sheesh, what are you guys doing??? Freakin delish! They have a very convenient and easy to get to bar for all of your beer and low abv cocktail needs seated in the middle of a light and well thought out space that has seating surrounding it. Even though the line was out of the door it wasn't overly noisy and the place was clean from top to bottom. All of the staff seemed very well trained, knowledgeable and happy. I had the opportunity to do a pit tour with one of the pit bosses named Quinton I believe, and his knowledge and exuberance showed through. Thanks Quinton, you rock! We were visited in line by Nathan Lewis as we waited for the doors to open for the day and he was very kind, offered beverages as we talked, and just made the beginning of the whole BBQ experience a pleasant time. We were also visited by Sawyer Lewis, one of, if not, the Big Bosses, and she was very personable and awesome to meet and talk to! This is BBQ. It's not your daddies BBQ. It is billed as New School BBQ. That is an accurate assessment. They don't do brisket except for one day a week usually. They don't regularly have pork ribs. Their sides such as cauliflower burnt ends and a kale salad and the like are not your typical fare. I'd hurt myself if I didn't have to drive 2.5 hours to enjoy this food. If you're nearby,...
Read moreWe'd been to the food truck a few times so were excited to checkout the brick and mortar location two weeks ago on a Sunday. It was pretty crowded and the line was past the free water setup by the door but that's pretty much the norm for good texas bbq.
The line moved a bit slower than it probably should have but they did have a host walking through the line to answer your questions and let you look at a menu while you're waiting. The people working there didn't seem happy to be there which isn't too crazy but their slogan said new school bbq with old school service (I guess old school is slow and unhappy?).
Food: We got a two meat plate with pulled pork and cauliflower burnt ends with pork hash and rice as one side and chorizo potatoes as the other side. The pulled pork was pretty good, cauliflower made me regret not getting a 2nd meat, the rice lacked flavor but the chorizo potatoes were pretty good.
We also got a lb of brisket and a lb of beef cheek, which we found out they now have every day. The beef cheek was by far the best thing of the meal and is probably in my top 10 of all bbq that I've ever tried which is a pretty strong statement. The brisket was pretty good too and I liked that they have different bbq sauces.
I do like that they claim to have bbq all days whereas most of the other places of this caliber start running out of stuff around 1pm. They were running out of meats when we were there but it was a Sunday during ACL and the host said it hadn't happened before so I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on that.
Issues: I think we were overcharged and my fiance went to talk to the cashier about it and they said they'd look into it. We were there for probably 45 minutes after that and they never came and said anything to us and when I checked my credit card statement a few days later, it still seemed incorrect so I tried emailing them. They still haven't responded to my email that I followed up with on 10/9, which is weird.
Small issue but adding it to the overcharging situation, the girl who puts meat on the scale and then your plate weighed our meat and then threw some back into their meat pile after having it be a part of our 1lb. Honestly, I didn't even notice at the time but my father in-law happened to be videoing her cutting it and caught that so we saw it later. I addressed it in my email to them also but again, no response which isn't good from a customer service perspective. I'll be calling my cc company shortly to dispute the...
