This is the 15th consecutive year that my wife and I have visited Austin for a month long reprieve from our cold and snowy Canadian winters.
This is the first time we tried Lula Mae's BBQ ... it is nothing short of fantastic. Wish we had found this place earlier.
Lula Mae greeted us as if we were family, we told her it was our first visit, she sat us down and gave us samples of her smoked brisket, sausage and pork chops ... The brisket was "melt in your mouth" fantastic as was the sausage and pork chops. I ordered the three meat platter and my wife ordered the two meat platter, each included two sides. The meat portions were huge!
Lula Mae's is inside the CITGO gas station store, her area is small and geared more for take out as evidenced by the customers who came in for brisket sandwiches while we were visiting. The place is easy to miss and not well signed so just look for the CITGO gas station on the corner of Airport Blvd & E 38 1/2 Street.
The brisket and sausage were better than the old Texas Rib Kings that used to be on Burnet and Research and definitely better than The Saltlick BBQ because her BBQ is all about the smoke ... not the sauce. The brisket pulls apart with a fork!
My wife would never eat brisket or sausage in the past ... she loved it at Lula Mae's, we had great food and a great visit, both provided by a...
Read moreMy best friend and I came to Austin for some R&R from Fort Worth and Houston. I searched for a list of black-owned food places to satisfy our desire for good food for the weekend! We saw smoked turkey legs on the menu of Lula Mae’s Barbeque and off we went. You could smell the smoke when we drove up. Inside, the gas station was small but man, the smell of the food was calling us to get everything on the menu. I began with “I hope the food is as good as it smells, cause we’re hungry and I don’t want to give you a bad review. The guy behind the counter, who was very friendly and patient as we asked questions about items on the menu asked me “what if the food is as good as it smells”, I said you’ll get the best review ever!! Here it is: 2 turkey legs, 1/2 lb. of ribs, 1/2 lb. of sausage, and 2 sides of green beans later, we were smacking our lips on some of the best barbecue I’ve had in 17 years living in Texas. At first we were going to complain because we didn’t get any sauce. I’m a firm believer if the food is seasoned good, you don’t need it. No sauce was needed on any of the meat, all well seasoned. The ribs were very tender, the turkey legs and sausage were cooked to perfection. OMG!!! We’re planning on coming back to Austin in August and Lula Mae’s is our...
Read moreI was looking at the East Austin BBQ scene and decided to take a gamble. The location is tight for parking and it is take-out only, but don't let that stop you because the BBQ is excellent. I was given a sample of a pork rib while I was in line, and it was melt-in-your mouth tender and flavorful. It made my taste buds dance with joy. I took my pound of brisket and half of a chicken order back home, where I was mauled by what seemed like a wild pack of wolves, but it was just my friend Aubrey. And she insisted that I share my BBQ with her. Threats were made, and since I'm a cowered at heart, I decided to be diplomatic and share with her. I prefer a leaner cut and she prefers a little more marbling in our brisket. We were both satisfied. It was all the good things that you would expect BBQ in Austin Texas to be. The chicken was pretty darn good too. Well worth the gamble and...
