We were looking for a vegan dinner spot for Friday Lent and came across Mission Burger. Everything is 100% vegan, the photos looked great, and the reviews were stellar, so we decided to give it a try. The food took an hour+ to arrive.
The Crunchwrap ($18.95): Impossible carne asada, house-made queso, crispy tostada shell, pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, guacamole, and sour cream. This was a massive, heavy crunchwrap—similar to Taco Bell’s but bigger and better. The queso was a bit too liquidy, making it a messy eat, but it was incredibly filling; I could only finish half.
Smoked Brisket Burger - Classic ($19.95): Double Impossible patty with smoky provolone, house-smoked brisket (made from mushrooms), BBQ sauce, mayonnaise, pickles, and crispy fried onions. The brisket was unreal—meaty with a texture more like steak than brisket. Regardless, the burger was phenomenal and didn’t need any extra sauce. The flavors were spot on.
Garlic Fries ($8.95): Fries tossed in olive oil, garlic, and parsley. Unfortunately, these were the only letdown. The fries lacked crunch and were bland without the garlic bits. We didn’t finish them and plan to air fry them for our next meal.
The Mighty Reuben ($22.49): This is one of their top sellers and something I was genuinely excited to try. It's a NYC-style Reuben made with a 1/2 pound of BeHive seitan that's corned and cured for at least 48 hours, then layered with Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and Mission sauce on marble rye bread. In the UberEats photo, the seitan looked bright red, but what we got was pale pink--and tasted more like ham than corned beef. The marble rye was overly sour, and I wasn't a fan of the sauerkraut. Honestly, neither of us could even figure out what we were tasting.
Classic Bacon Mushroom Melt Burger ($18.95): This comes with double Impossible patties, a double portion of bacon, mushrooms, American cheese, pickles, and extra cheese. Despite all that, it actually looked smaller than the Reuben. It's recommended for mushroom lovers, but they completely missed the mark--the mushrooms weren't browned at all and had zero earthy, umami flavor. They also failed to capture the bacon essence. This ended up being one of the worst burgers I've ever had. I couldn't even eat more than a...
Read moreI came here with my wife. She doesn't eat red meat but I do. She likes to bring me to places and tell me "X taste just like the real thing!" And then I eat it and go, no, I definitly can tell the difference and usually things are just ok to me. This might be the best fake meat thing I've ever had. Knowing it's not meat I can taste a slight hint if secondary taste that signals not meat, but it's the slightest ever. If you handed this to me at a BBQ and didn't tell me it wasn't meat, I don't think I would know. It's not that fall apart meat real brisket has but it's fine texture wise. I would absolutely eat here again. The fries are good too. And they also have some gluten free options. It's in a little market shop so there's plenty of alcoholic and soft drink options. And a number of really got deserts in the market counter. And the service here is super friendly. I hope there's good things in the future for them. Check them out. If you are veggie or vegan, this is a great place, and if you're not but want to go out with your vegan or vegie friends this is a place you can go without feeling like you compromised for your own meal options. Or if you like meat but would like to go a day without knowing a cow died for your meal, you can have that same meat satisfaction here.
Oh, also, you get a fresh chocolate chip cookie with every order. Which is also vegan, and i had no idea, but...
Read moreUpdated review: Mission Burger Co. is the BEST place for us to stop when traveling through Austin and would definitely visit more often if we lived in town. A month ago, we visited for the first time and were very impressed except for the Stake Frites which resulted in 4 stars. The owner invited us back to try something else on the house and WE ARE SO GLAD we took them up on that offer. We got the Brisket burger (+ garlic fries); it was the perfect balance of sweet and smokey, with realistic texture. I truly think if my meat-loving family was served the Brisket Burger, they wouldn't know it isn't a genuine brisket burger. The execution was on point: it tasted exactly like brisket. (Kept the old pics but added the Brisket Burger featured in the patio area.)
Old review: Great vibes--both from the location and the staff. We had the Stake frites with chimichurri and a side of garlic fries, and the Turkey sandwich. We really enjoyed the sandwich and the fries but weren't very impressed with the steak frites. The chimichurri was ok and the steak wasn't very good. I think they executed exactly how it was meant to be and the problem was more of a recipe error--it tasted too much like the weird underlying taste of an impossible burger. It was also very expensive, we spent about $50ish.
They do give you free cookies while you...
