Tex Mex Joe's — Restaurant in Austin

My husband and I pass this place every day on the way to work. our car starting rumbling on N. Lamar. we turned into the plaza and parked. we needed a tow and they weren't coming for 2 hours!! We went into Tex-Mex Joe's to eat or at least get out the heat. we ended up having a really good breakfast!! the migas was sooo good!!! velvet beans and nice pipping hot potatoes. my husband had two potato and egg tacos. hes not as easy to please when it comes to breakfast and a stomach full of stress from the car. he ended up LOVING the tacos! they were so full and huge. (we eat taco cabana tacos a lot) the coffee was MUCH better than i expected! but most of all the guy that was working there. i don't know if hes the owner or not. but he was SO kind!! He seemed to know his regulars and was so helpful. we left and sat outside (we didn't want to over stay our welcome) and he had came out a few mins later and told us we were welcome to come back in for as long as we liked and offered us water many times. it was so nice of him. I never write reviews. but this guy and this place are well deserving of it! they made a very stressful morning melt...

First visit here and a great first impression!!!

I ordered take out for lunch, a cheese Chile relleno that came with refried beans, rice, two flour tortillas, and lettuce with tomato - of course salsa was included - both red and green as I requested when asked.

When I approached the restaurant, I was welcomed with a "we are open" when he saw me taking pictures. I entered through the doors to a small establishment that was clean and had cute decor. The host/cashier was very friendly and had a warm smile.

My food was ready very quickly and I thanked him and went on my way. The food was very good. They do not deep fry the chille relleno which is how I prefer it and the portion was huge. This was filled with lots of white cheese and smothered in a delicious verde sauce. The rice and beans were average for Tex-Mex, not bad at all. The green salsa was my favorite, it had spice but also a really good flavor.

I've been eating here for years, and this restaurant, the service, the consistency and the attention to detail has always impressed me! Sometimes it's the subtle details that set an establishment apart, and this restaurant gets those right too, beginning at the greeting. Clean. The menu selection (food and drinks), and quality of those selections. The consistency of each meal. The service from start to finish. I can say Tex-Mex Joe's has been successfully getting all these details right for years. You know when your plate is spotless, all food placed perfectly, down to the bathroom being spotless (I'm talking even the caulking looks fresh on top of the room being spotless). Now there's a patio too. Paradise. I'll sit here and drink margs until those of you Austinites realize the best gems aren't always advertised in the "best of"...
