For those with dietary restrictions- Bad-I’ll start here since it’s why I wanted to post. Ordered vegan fudge. Asked if there were any nuts bc my toddler daughter has milk, egg and various nut allergies. Should’ve noticed a slight hesitation on the workers part but he said ‘no, you’re good.’ Tried it a couple days later, and she had a big anaphylactic reaction 😲. I called manager who looked up ingredients and found it had cashew butter in it. Luckily, I gave her a small piece and had medicine ready to give her to blunt the reaction some bc she had one other nut accident in the past which was a disaster. Ultimately, I hold myself responsible as a parent for my child, and I took 10 percent more lax approach than I could have. I def asked about the ingredients but this time I didn’t have him go in the back to look at ingredient list and was a little too casual with like a 19y/o working. also there was another vegan fudge option with peanuts, so I just assumed after the workers response they recognize ppl want it with nuts and an option without which of course was a wrong assumption. Obviously upset with the worker, but I think the manager appeared upset and said he would tell the worker and staff about being careful but of course can’t confirm that after I had called. But posting so other dietary needy people are aware.

Good-before getting the vegan chocolate with nuts in it, we had tried the vegan ice creams, a few flavors. They really were bomb tbh. Awesome options and every flavor had every ingredient listed. So high recommend for the ice creams. I later pieced together the ice creams were from an outside company that probably is used to dietary related questions so has a little card with all ingredients. Whatever company they get the ice cream from, they do a great job. Probably again a reason I didn’t hound the worker about the vegan fudge ingredients more. But the vegan ice cream company products are more clearly identified whereas the products made in house are not.

Anyway, of course some good some bad. If you know to ask more diligently about ingredients it really was a delicious place. Not trying to overly harp on the problem here but think it’s important searching for allergy...

I am so glad I happened upon this place. The staff is phenomenal: courteous, accommodating, and knowledgeable, with personalities that really shine in this environment. Give 'em a raise. The ice cream is excellent (though be prepared -- even the child-size cone is very generous), the candy diverse and unique, and the case offerings, like chocolate-dipped Oreos molded into a flower shape and sprinkled with edible glitter, are well-presented (and were equally well-received as a spontaneous gift). Despite its very new-Austin location, it has the feel of the best community shops in the old Austin I remember from twenty years ago.

Edit: This place is still great. They seem to attract real talent for behind the counter. Though the faces I knew when I wrote the above review seem to have moved on, the current staff is also stellar. I especially appreciate the quirky drawing cutouts that now accent the place—artwork by a guy who also serves up the ice cream with charm and panache. Give these guys...

I imagine the staff might have been exhausted from the eclipse-viewing tourist crowds, but I can merely report my experience. The store did have lots of unusual candy brands, but nothing in particular appealed to me so I decided to have some of their vegan ice cream, especially because I appreciate their decision to serve only a vegan ice cream brand. After I ordered the cone, asking for about half the usual amount of ice cream because I wanted to eat less sugar, the server (I'm serious) refused to give me the smaller amount of ice cream that I requested on my cone. (No, I had not accepted the cone and then changed my mind - I do understand that nuance of sanitation - I hadn't touched the cone, I asked twice and I did not ask to be charged less.) This unpleasant interaction marred what would have been a fun visit to the Yummi Joy store. Oh but the ice cream was very good, so I do recommend...

Your one stop shop for all things candy and sweet in downtown Austin! Not only do they carry a plethora of sodas and candies (from nostalgic to Asian candies) they also feature plenty of vegan options: both homemade fudges and ice creams — in plenty of interesting and fun flavours! (Rocky road, cookies and cream and unicorn poop are some flavours they carry.) I’m happy to report that they also carry various flavoured cones, which not a lot of ice cream shops do. My cookies and cream scoop in a matcha cone was to die for, and so far Yummi Joy has been the only place in Austin that I’ve found that flavour of cone. Next to the best toy store around, I definitely recommend stopping by here after some intense toy and collectable shopping for a sweet treat. Even if you don’t grab any ice cream, their soda and candy varieties are well worth a look.
