This was one my favorite restaurants. The food and service as always consistant. Always a guarantee that I would leave happy After the renovation and new staff I do not intend to come back any time soon. The food is not consistant and service little to be desired. I was greeted immediatly and was seated down right away. However it just went down from there. Sat at my table and waited for about 15 min for our server to come. I finally had to flag some one down . A girl name Sam helped us and I explained that we had been waiting for someone to come. She apologized and said that she would help us. She took our drink and food order. Came with bread and our drinks. We had rasphberry lime rickey which was delish. She even followed up and informed us that our food would be out soon. All of a sudden ten min later a girl walks up and says hello may I take your order? I informed her that we had waited a while and flagged someone else to help us. She then says okay well I will be helping you from now on. This new server which I dont even know her name because she never introduced herself asked us if wanted a refill on the drink. I replied with a yes and thanked her . The same drink a rasphberry lime rickey tasted absolutly terrible! How can a drink I just had not even remotely taste the same! I asked if it was the same drink and she replied yes. Our carribean buffalo tenders came out. I was excited because this is my go to app. Took a bite and not the same at all! Very dissapointed that the food was not as I remebered . Tasted more like a barbeque buffalo. We asked for a check and a box for the leftovers . Gave us the check and the boxes but no bag to carry them in. Sam walked by and said let me get you a bag. Sam was on the ball and gave us more attention than our actual server. She is a fantastic and caring person Thank you Sam! You are an asset to NYAJ and hope things turn around for this reataurant. When I left I i formed the manager on duty and informed him about my experience and told him that the tip should go to Sam. He did not even appologize and could really care less. Wish the old staff and the consistancy was there what a dissappointment.
I did go back two weeks later to give NYAJ another try because I had someone take me out to lunch. I did not want to sway their choice based on my experience . But I do have to say it could have easily been an off night when I went previously...because food and service was fantastic. I just hope the consistancy is there...
Read moreMy husband and I walked over to this restaurant from our hotel for dinner last night. The hostess greeted and seated us quickly as the restaurant was not busy. It was clean and tidy with plenty of seating and the overall atmosphere was quite nice. My husband ordered the grilled cheese and tomato soup and I ordered the Southwest Crispy Chicken Salad. While we waited for our entrees, bread and olive oil were brought out to the table. Unfortunately, this was the best part of the meal. It seemed to be taking a good while to get our food especially considering it wasn’t very busy. However, we continued to wait patiently. When the food finally arrived, my husband’s soup was cold, his grilled cheese was burnt (and he doesn’t mind his a bit charred), and my chicken tenders were tiny shriveled charcoal briquettes. I could barely saw through one with my knife. I put the chicken aside and started working just on the salad until the waiter reappeared. He brought extra dressing and refilled my drink as requested. I asked him if all their chicken tenders were served that way and his reply was “No, we have new people in the back who are still training. They’re pretty well done, huh? I’ll let them know.” I thanked him and when he returned to check on us, he brought the bill. I asked if he’d let the manager know and he said he had. He also repeated himself to state he knew the cooks would be getting more training. The manager never came to see us, no offer of recooking our food was made, and certainly no changes were made to our bill. I never complain about food even when it’s subpar just because I’m not that type of person. Apparently we were the guinea pig customers for the training cooks. The overall lack of care regarding the state of our food is what was most upsetting. I hope Not Your Average Joes can get their cooks trained to at least be “average” or else that kind of service...
Read moreFirst time at a Not Your Average Joe’s. My wife and I were in Hyannis on our way to Nantucket (we’re from the Midwest) and stopped in here for a late lunch.
As far as the location goes, it’s just ok (it’s just in a strip mall), but the interior is fairly nice. As the weather was beautiful, we ate outside. Overall it was a good choice, but be aware that you’ll be sitting adjacent to a very busy parking lot. That’s not great for atmosphere. Not the end of the world of course, but something to be aware of.
As far as the overall experience, it was ok. The hostess was a bit unprofessional and awkward, and our waitress wasn’t especially friendly (though this could just be a cultural difference between New England and the Midwest).
However, the kitchen is where this place shines! I have celiacs, so gluten free is a necessity for me. They do not claim to be a truly gluten free kitchen, but they have multiple good gluten free options and when aware of my “allergy” they took every precaution they could. I had the gluten free chicken piccata, and it was phenomenal! The portion size was very large, and the food was prepared to perfection. This is especially challenging with gluten free preparation, and they nailed it! The gentleman from the kitchen who brought it out even took the time to tell me that the kitchen had been made aware of my allergy and took every precaution possible. My wife had a traditional meal (actually had the bang bang shrimp from the app menu as her meal), and she thought it was amazing as well.
So, I dinged one star for the meh location and somewhat unprofessional staff (admittedly, it wasn’t terrible, just not amazing either). But for the food alone, it is so worth it. And if you need gluten free, I HIGHLY recommend...
